Ignition key doesn't work
From time to time I get a strange problem with my 2005 V50 T5. On inserting the ignition key I don't get the noise of the key being accepted (or is it the steering lock being released?) and when I turn the key to start the engine, no lights come on on the dash and the starter doesn't engage. Occasionally, when I try to take the key out it won't turn past position I and I have to disconnect the battery to release it.
The cure that I have been using is one that the AA guy used the first time this happened when I was stuck on a clearway so had to call for help, and that's to spray electrical cleaner into the keyhole, wait a few minutes and then insert the key. So far this has worked but I feel that I'm living on borrowed time. Any suggestions as to what the problem is and how to fix it more reliably than carrying a can of spray cleaner to be used as and when?

Had a very similar issue which resulted in me having to have a new key re-programmed.
Do you get "Key Error" on the drivers display? |

Your problem sounds a mix of mechanical and electrical since you can't move the key once it's in but see here for what may be causing it to not release the steering lock/start the engine.
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=285582 Your best bet is to get it replaced sooner than later, as when it goes you'll be stuck!

Richcoleuk,
I did get the ‘key error’ message the first time it happened a couple of years ago, but not since. Also trying my more or less unused spare key makes no difference. FunkyMelon Thanks for the link. I had discovered that thread before posting my query and to be honest I’d no idea what it was all about. But the symptoms are different in any case. What is it you’re suggesting be replaced?

Thanks for the explanation.
Food for thought!
