Default V90 drivers seat adjustment

Just recently my V90 (1997) drivers seat has decided to move forward when I push the appropriate button, but not quite as far as it has done. It stops about 2 -3 inches short which annoys my wife who cannot reach the pedals fully. Is this an electrical fault or mechanical and would my specialist Volvo garage (DMW in Merton) be able to fix it at next annual service? Thanks guys.

First thing i'd do is get the seat as far back as possible and as high as possible then get underneath it with a torch and a small mirror.

Inspect the seat runners to make sure something hasn't fallen into them (like a £1 coin or similar) and is causing an obstruction 2-3" from the furthest point of travel of the seat runners.

Bear in mind the obstruction could be halfway along one or other of the runners and is preventing the rear end of the runner moving forwards as well.

If it goes backwards and forwards under control of the buttons then it's unlikely (but not impossible) that it's electrical, sounds more mechanical to me as in an object stuck in the seat runners.

In the meantime, a cushion behind your good ladys back will put her further forward on the seat to take into account her "petite" legs.

Default V90 drivers seat adjustment

Hi Dave,
I have now had my car checked by the Volvo specialist garage who said the the drive cog on the inside track (i.e. next to the centre) has some worn teeth. Do you know if that can be replaced or is it going to be a replacement seat? The mechanic didn't think it can be replaced and I should look for a replacement seat.

Without actually looking at it i can't say for sure Derek, however my line of thought is that the drive pinon on the end of the motor shaft didn't magically appear on the shaft, it's presumably held on either with a roll pin, dowel pin, grub screw or a taper bush lock to quote a few common methods.

However, looking at the diagrams here :

https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/s...rimLevel=24671

in particular, items #32 & #34, it appears at least one of them is NLA. Bear in mind also that's a drivers seat for a LHD car (USA site) and many RHD only parts seem to become NLA long before LHD parts, there's a high probability that the RHD bits will both be NLA from Volvo - not to mention the ridiculously high cost of having to buy a complete sub-assembly for one component!

If you either have access to a lathe and dividing head or know of a machine shop that does, you could almost certainly have a replacement pinion made up. However it may be much cheaper and easier to buy one on ebay :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_s...l+gears&_frs=1

Alternatively buy a secondhand seat sub-frame from a 960 or S/V90 (they appear to be the same according to the parts webstore) and transplant your seat onto it or buy a replacement seat complete.

It's all swings and roundabouts and the urgency of it depends on when your MoT is due and how fussy your tester is. By rights, it should be possible to adjust the seat fore and aft and if it isn't, that should be a failure. That said, if your tester is a similar size to you, there's every chance he won't even bother to check the seat adjuster so won't fail it.

Just had a quick look on fleabay, the only 960 drivers seat i found is part of a complete beige interior set including the 7-seat conversion for £350 + P&P of £50 but i did find an XC90 drivers seat for £50 :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-XC9...E/152770793036

Whether that would yield the right bits for transfer or whether the whole seat could be used, i don't know. I've always thought of the XC90 as being a V90 body/interior perched on top of an AWD chassis, whether right or wrong they do share a lot of parts so that may work.
