Default Pas noise when on full lock

Hi all.

On my new to me 06 xc70, which I have been busy servicing, has developed a high pitched noise whem the steering wheel is put to max lock.
Initially the noise is not there and developes a second or so later.
If I rev the engine it also goes but does come back.

I never noticed the noise when I checked i over and drove it home after buying it.

Our other v70xc does not make this noise.

Work i have done since is:

- change the alt belt, tensioners, idles, alt freewheel, cambelt waterpump.

- flush the old red fluid out of the pas system, remove and clean the tank and fitted the green fluid.

I have bled the pas system by having the wheels in the air and turning lock to lock many times.

The car has not been driven on the road yet only moved on our drive.

I have taken the alt belt back off to check for any bearing play. I do not feel any, however
There is around 1mm lateral play in the pas pulley shaft.

My question are:

1. Could there still be air in the system? If so how to get it out?

2. Should there be lateral movement in the shaft of the pas pump?

3. Is the noise down to the pump failing?

4. Could it be the pump bearings?

Here is a pic of the pump in the car. I'm not sure if there has been a previous repair in the line with the metal connectors in it.

Mine and I've heard many more do this so I do nothing other than avoid full lock.

Surely the sound means somethings wrong though?
Our v70xc does not make it.

Verify all screw clamps at the reservoir and pump. Also may want to remove the serpentine belt and spin each pulley by hand (3 or 4 of them). May actually not be the pump but another pulley scretching. Important check on a D5 engine with over 120k miles. May also want to put some heavy grease on the steering locks, the plastic pieces attached at the front of the wishbone. Another thing, may want to look if some tie rods have been replaced with the wrong ones: with the wheel straight, turn the steering to full lock L,R: does it turn the same amount of rotation?

Hi oragex

Hose clamps checked.

I've changed all pulleys and alt belt except the aircon and pas. All genuine volvo

It only makes the noise when the pas it held at full lock.

It's an xc70 so no steering limiters.

Will check lock to lock turns. No idea what's been replaced on the rod ends.

It is an interesting noise, maybe from the pump pulley but if true, the question is what would make it struggle at full turns. May try some bearing grease right on the steering stoppers where they have wear - and maybe swap them (between the wheels) if too much wear.

I don't think that pulley play is an issue per se. I can even leak a little without problems.

May use something like this (with care) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVWY2fMzrpc

I think the operative word here is "held"

Both my 2002 V70 T5 Man 240K miles , and my current 2004 V70 AWD R 100k+ made/make the noise you describe - but ONLY when the steering wheel was being forced up against the steering stoppers. - happens regularly on R - turning circle of an oil tanker.
Releasing the steering wheel minutely was/is enough to cause the noise to go away.

I put it down to the pump being asked to turn the wheels, fluid being pumped to carry out the task, but there is no movement left in the system, cos the wheels were up agin the stops. This increases the fluid pressure in the system above normal, causing the pump to complain..

The pump never complains at other times ..ever.

I'm assuming the liquid in your pics is all water, I don't have any fluid leaks.

Cheers

Bob

just an idea but is the fluid in the PAS tank getting frothy?
as my S80 was making strange noises and the fluid was getting frothy, which was sorted and all good

Do xc70 have steering stoppers?

No frothy fluids. Although when held I cannot see inside the bottle.

Bob

This is normally the release valve at the pump, when forcing a little against the steering stop - should make a 'humm' not too loud but still audible (normal operation)
