Dog dish install gone wrong. No starting

Hi all,

My 97 940 2.3 turbo is getting a dog dish put on. It's on but does not start the engine.

I'm sure I have the correct fly wheel but do not know whats wrong. The garage doing it has had it off twice now.

How does the timing setup?

I don’t know very much about this but my first thought would be, does the engine have a crank position sensor (rpm sensor) and does it receive it’s signal from the fly wheel and is it working?

Yes it was working before. I asked on FB group. It looks like the flywheel is not in the correct place. It can have 8 different place to be bolted down.

So if the flywheel is not in the correct position then the CPS signal is being generated at the wrong time and is confusing the ECU.
There are others on this forum with much more knowledge than me who may know how to determine which position to mount the flywheel.

It should fire at some point.

Is the rpm needle flickering a little after about 1-2s of cranking.

What is the dog dish from? It needs to have the correct EZK pattern. For example 1 from a 360 with a renix pattern won't work.

I don't know much about the dog-dish flywheel but looking at it, it appears to have a series of holes round the edge, presumably for timing purposes. That kind of suggests there will be two "blank" holes - in other words holes that haven't been drilled one diametrically opposite the other. These usually correspond to the TDC point and should line up with the CPS (Crank Position Sensor) on the bell housing, which is usually at the top.

If the garage times the engine up to TDC on #1 or #4, then refits the flywheel so one of these "blanks" is lined up or just past (very slightly past not a long way) the sensor going anti-clockwise (normal engine roatation) there should, in theory at least, be a good chance it's in the right place.

However, as i've said, i don't know much about the dog-dish arrangement and as Tony points out above, there are different dog-dish flywheels out there. Might be worth a try if you're convinced it's the right flywheel for the system though.

Put the engine at TDC on #1 cylinder and the 'blank' on the flywheel should be in the middle of the starter motor hole.

I used a bit of tippex to mark around the one crank bolt hole that lines up with it.

This , the -2 at the hole of he starter, done

I was told about TDC and gap where the starter goes. This was passed to the garage but nothing said since. I will keep you updated. Cheers
