Rear fog light not working
Hi all, I have been to take the car for the mot today and the rear fog light has failed ....checked the bulb and that seems ok. The mechanic said he thought it was odd that when I pressed the button the dash wasnt showing the fog light on there. Maybe the switch is broken?? The car is a volvo s40 r reg with no front fogs.
cheers dave |

fog light
presumably the mot tester switched your headlights on, the rear foglight will not operate with the day running lights on,

There is a relay behind the instrument cluster, tucked away in a stupidly awkward (and often extremely hot) place under the top of the dashboard. Why the f** they couldn't use a simple switch beats me...
Anyway, if it is working you can hear it click when you press the foglight button, and the dash indicator light should come on. Pig of a job to get at it. You need to drop the steering column by slackening the holding bolts enough to extract the speedo pod. Speedo pod is very fragile, with lots of flimsy printed cicuit stuff on the back. I opened up the relay case and found that the solder had cracked around one of the connecting pins. Re-soldered the pin (careful not to overheat the electronic components) and it worked OK. Not a job to be tried unless you are familiar with mending PCBs - easier to buy a new relay. |

Hi, thanks for your reply mate. I have located the relay and am going to have a crack at getting it out later. I cannot hear any clicking etc from the relay when pressing the button....cant hear anything at all and the light isnt coming on. I will hopefully cure it with the relay. cheers dave |
