Default 1996 960 Estate 3.0 auto

Hello chaps,

I am in the process of getting rid of the above vehicle, which I have had from new and which has only 72,000 miles on the clock.

I was (and might yet be) going to scrap her, but I'd have a sneaking preference for someone who loves the marque to give her a good home as an alternative.

The good news: runs well. Bodywork in excellent condition, though front bumper is scuffed. Alloys, A/C, leather upholstery + usual stuff you'd associate with what was (in its day) a high spec car. The old girl could still burn away boy racers at lights if called upon to do so.

The bad news: Is overdue an MOT and I have been warned, by my tame mechanic, that both polybelt (?) and cambelt are showing wear and tear. At least one of the tyres is also likely to be in imminent need of replacement. Also, the head gasket was re-skimmed about 10 years ago - which I am told can be an issue with 960s, though only needs fixing once? Also, one of the piston rings has "slipped" and this needs work on it as can be thirsty on oil in consequence. Nothing else adverse that I can think of.

Appreciate that I have probably destroyed any interest by being too naive in my description, but if anyone wants to think about offering me more than the £400 that I have been quoted for scrap then I'd be very happy to hear from you.

I think I have successfully attached a couple of pictures....though I had to reduce their size/quality to get them on...

Does look nice. Does it drive well at the minute?
And is it the 6 cylinder engine?
Beckenham, is that south London way?

Yes, plenty of poke. Only issue is the slipped ring - which means that if you really put your foot down you generate oil burn smoke. This only happens at more than 3000 rpm.

and yes, it's the straight 6 24v 3.0 engine

Beckenham is indeed SE London - or NW Kent to the pretentious...

OK cheers,

The journey and the £400 makes it expensive for me, especially without MOT, so I may have to pass.

Thanks anyway

Thanks for the feedback, gentlemen. I would probably, in truth, take c.£250 to give it a good home, but will in any event leave things until the end of the week before calling in the undertakers...

£400 scrap sounds like a very good offer. A friend of mine was scrapping a Lexus LS400 last month which I think is slightly heavier and he was only offered £210. That was from 3 bids and that was the highest.

Thanks for your comments, everyone. Much appreciated, but the car has now been scrapped and this thread is now closed. All the best.
