oil leak @ rear seal and rev at startup
this is my very first post so please help me out. it appears my rear seal at the transmission is leaking but all the instructions i can find, like haynes, are very labor intensive. does someone know of a source for a more simplified approach? also, when first started the engine revs up to about 1500 rpm before it settles back to about 750-800. could that just need a readjustment to the idle? thanks

rear seal
there is no shortcut to changing the rear seal. i have heard of these seal rejuvinators such as "forte" which you add to the oil.
regarding the high revs, possibly the throttle body housing needs cleaning out. also it may be that you need to change the vacuum pipes and breather box/oil seperator behind the inlet manifold. worth doing, as it is this box blocking up which increases the air pressure in the engine and blows the seals. throttle body worth doing at the same time as oil seperator, as it has to come off anyway. for the rear crankshaft oil seal change, i was quoted £220 plus the seal from a gearbox rebuild specialist, and if you want the gearbox rebuilt it would be some more. cheaper than the dealer.!! for the seal good luck. if you put a thread on how to do the oil breather system, there is an instruction on how to do it which someone may send you. |
