oil leak after clutch change
1996 850, 2.5l, 10v
Just had the clutch changed and also the rear oil seal seeing as the thing was stripped down, but now have an oil leak (where there wasn't one before). Seems to be oil dripping from the very bottom of the engine, but not where the driveshafts enter the bell-housing thing. Seems to be a semi-circle cutout at the bottom of the engine where it drains from. Would this typically indicate the new seal has failed?..or do these things take a few days to bed in? i just need an inkling of where to look before i go back and have a whinge...like how can you tell where an engine leak is from..where are the bet places to try to find the source... seems to be coming from the big cogged wheel at the side of the engine, just in front of the driveshafts |

RE: oil leak after clutch change
It does seem like you have been unlucky and the oil seal was damaged or incorrectly fitted. On my 850 T5 there is a small hole where the gearbox joins to the engine, sort of a drain hole I suppose. If tis is where the oil is comming from then either your gearbox or engine is leaking. It could be worth checking the gearbox hasnt been overfilled, infact it could also be worth checking anyway to see if it has been filled up, as oil will have run out when the driveshafts were removed.
If you are not 100% sure where the leak is from you'll need to clean the underside of the engine and go for a short drive and then do an inspection. I'd think the garage will try every excuse not to have to replace the seal again because of the amount of labour involved. Simon |

RE: oil leak after clutch change
They've agreed to have it straight back in, even if it means stripping everything off again.
Just I like to know what bits they are talking about when I go see them. |

RE: oil leak after clutch change
Turned out it was the new rear oil seal that was faulty...so now Volvo have a labour bill from my mechanic for redoing the job.
One advantage of using genuine parts. |

Whats that about genuine parts and labour charge refunds for non Volvo mechanics? Do they refund any remedial work?

RE: oil leak after clutch change
According to my mechanic (specialist independant) they can return the part to Volvo and claim costs back (in this case about 8hrs labour) as they assume the seal was faulty upon delivery. Volvo will investigate the cause of the seal failure on the part. I assume there must be some sort of level of competance required of the mechanic first and some sort of validation of their expertise....so not something anyone off the street could do.
