Default 1997 Volvo V70 Sill Covers: ~

1997 Volvo V70 Sill Covers: ~
The above have been fitted from new and as part of the Waxoyl treatment carried out on the car I decided to treat the sills inside & out. The covers are quite easy to remove by taking the series of plastic rivets out from the underside- they hold the same to the main metal sill sections.
You will have to knock the small pin further into the fitting and then lever it out of the retaining hole- some may be saved depending on the fit but you can get a pack of 20 for £3:79 via ebay so more than enough to reinstate. If you have front mud flaps fitted then the bottom 3 rivets will also have to be removed, I have the flat head type here so quite simple to remove and reuse.
Two other square clips exist that keep the sill against the metal etc. and they just pull out or leave in place making sure that they don’t get lost if dislodged on removal (2 per side – front /rear) The sill covers can now be levered upwards from the rear door side to lift the top hidden clips that are secured to the underside of the plastic covers. They pass through the drilled holes formed into the mail metal sill tops- 4 front & 3 rear. Do this with both doors fully open- the top clips will remain in place and can be reused. I found that the main sill structure is spot on for this car- couple of rub marks but rust free throughout.
The covers have been cleaned up inside - the rear holds a little mud- but after 20 plus years it wasn’t great- easily hosed off etc. Wayoyl diluted with clean engine oil was sprayed through all the top holes (pressure spray gun applicator) this was followed up the next day with small quantities of oil poured through the same holes into the main structure- you won’t need a lot as it seeps through & out. The main sill outer structure is also painted over with the Waxoyl- brush applied- prior to replacing the sill covers. The plastic covers have molded lines on the undersides that keep the same slightly away from the main sill- any water/condensation is allowed to run free rather than being trapped accelerating potential rust etc.- The top sill is also fully coated on the undersides-belt & braces!
The main sill structure may have interior access grommets under the trim & carpets (similar to the 240 model) at some stage I will check and spray up again if present?
Hope it helps if you ever wonder about this hidden location.
Bob

Thanks Bob,

In case anyone is interested, here is a parts diagram for 1998 showing the sill pieces. Not sure if 1997 was different
