Question HID bulb cracked insulator?

Hi Chaps,

Just been trying to fit some HID bulbs into my S60 from my old car.

Got one to work but the other wouldn't. Having looked at it the insulation is cracked on the parallel wire.

Anyone know if it's repairable??

Thanks

Pic included.

they look like the budget chinese ones, you cant repair them, just buy another set, they are about £8 delivered for two bulbs

Cheers.

These were actually from a company called Engync and not that cheap. May be under warranty still. I'll check.

Thanks bud.

The cracked insulation sleeve would probably not cause a circuit problem as shown in your photo. Can you check the continuity from the connector to the outer end of the discharge tube?
A quick check would be to swap your known good lamp to the side that doesn't ignite - might save the expense of a new lamp if it is not that that is the problem?

Hi mate,

I'll try a continuity check later with my multimeter. I did swap the lamps over to the opposite circuit and the good one ignited but not the one in the pic.

Thank you.

Just swapped over the ballasts and the bulbs are fine!!

One of the ballasts is defective. Will check all connections tomorrow..

If no joy I'll get a new one as I don't think they're serviceable.

Thanks for the advice guys.

That doesn't quite make sense with your previous comment:

If you'd swapped the bulbs around, and the fault was with the ballast on the headlamp, surely the fault would have remained on the same side?

I wasn't clear with my language. What I meant was that originally I tried both complete harnesses on one side of the car. One bulb didn't ignite, hence thinking it was a bulb defect, insulator cracked etc as in OP. That was a red herring. I then swapped the ballasts and the bulbs and the fault followed the ballast not bulb. Again this was on the known working side of the car. I had kind of thought that the ballasts wouldn't be at fault as they are an enclosed component so was biased not to think about swapping them at first. If that makes sense!

Anyway. I checked the wiring today and one of the connectors on the 'duff' ballast was poorly seated and everything is working now!!

All's well that ends well!!

Thanks again
