Always a whine when my wife is in the car!

I have had exactly the same prolem for a year or two - very intermittent - never happens when mechanic is doing test drive.

When driven gently (to save fuel) at between 30 to 50 rear nearside seems to make a worn bearing/whining noise, but drop a gear or speed up/slow down by a couple of mph and it goes.
I fear it is rear transmission but can't fathom why it doesn't get worse at speed (ie a bearing) and is not gear specific.

Any more thoughts please?

Not yet - I'm planning to recheck each of the wheel bearings, but at a couple of hundred pounds each (at least for the volvo bearings), I'm reluctant to go replacing them unless I'm totally sure I can identify a fault.

Wheel bearings are common problem on the rear. Would have thought £200 would be cheap for the peace of mind of knowing if you have a transmission problem?

It sounds more like the front to me, although others have mentioned that can still mean its the rears. The cheapest 'reasonable quality' bearings I can find are on ebay - fronts £154 each, rears £174 each - any recommendations for other suppliers ?

Sorry to hear that - let us know the outcome (and cost to repair).

Send Rufe a PM for a price. I have bought the best part of £1000 worth of stuff from him in the last couple of months and couldn't beat his prices for genuine, very good service too.

I have found GSF parts to be sub standard in the past. Lower wishbones on my old V70 lasted 20k miles, volvo ones 120k miles. My brother had similar experience.

Well today I've checked each wheel in turn with the car in neutral. There is no detectable play or noise present when rotating in either direction. Also did a test drive and direction changes make no increase/decrease in the sound. All I can currently go on is that from within the cabin the whine appears to come from the front passenger side - so either front left bearing or gearbox issue.

I tend to maintain my vehicles myself, but do garages have any specialist equipment to aid diagnosis -I.e. A sound monitor of some sorts that can be placed on the hubs while driving?

When I did my front one it was a leap of faith. No play, no roughness, no noise change based on direction/load.
