Default XC90 D5 Auto gearbox oil capacity

Hi guys, I'm looking for a bit of help or information on changing the oil in my auto gearbox. I've changed the oil today but when I drained the gearbox I only managed to get 3 liters of oil of it. I ran the engine whilst draining the gearbox to pump it through but that's all I could get out of it and it's my understanding that there should be 5.5 liters in there on my 2012 xc90. I haven't seen any leaks so I suppose I'm asking what might of happened to the other 2.5 liters? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can’t drain every bit out anyway… there’s fluid inside the internals of the transmission (that’s not accessible).

I don’t know the exact amount of transmission fluid required for the XC90, but other Volvo’s with the same transmission certainly can’t drain 5.5 litres. The most I could get out of my car was 3 litres.

a quick search on google to find out which auto gearbox you have will help you. some have dipsticks others have level plugs make sure to use the correct fluid as using the wrong fluid can make auto boxes act up.. some have 2 drain plugs the fluid that did not come out is in the valve body and transmission cooler and its pipework.

Hi kev, if that is true then I'm bang on the money by draining only 3 liters, it's just that I had read on other threads on this fourum that people had managed to drain up to 6 litres when they had done it so I got a little worried lol!

Hi simmy, I wasn't aware that there where different types of gearboxs for the xc90, I naively thought they where all the same. My box doesn't have a drain plug it has a level plug. Thank you for the information 👍🏻

I don't think i would have ran the engine whilst draining the box i normally just do a sump dump ie drain and refill with the exact amount that came out with cold box and cold fluid going back in

Hi cbv8, I've alway ran the engine whilst draining auto boxes, it helps to pump out the oil, I've done it on a few different cars now and touch wood 🪵 it's always been ok. I'm glad to hear that you do it that way, do you find that it helps and how often do you do it? Cheers

If you are using the engine to pump out the oil, you are talking about a whole different ball game. You would then be disconnecting at the transmission cooler to pump out what you are filling at the same rate. Doing that, I would guess you would need 8 or 9 litres to complete the transfusion. You would notice the colour changing as new oil completes the circle. Not advising you to do it mind. Easier to just drop 3 litres from gravity and replace. Do this 2 or 3 times and consider your transmission serviced.
Make sure you use proper spec oil.

^^^^ what he said.

Just undo the bolt and let it drain without running then engine. You should get around 3 litres. Refill the same amount and then drive the car 10 miles at least and then repeat. Doing that 3 times will get you to 85-90% new fluid.

When done, check the level by removing the centre plug of the drain plug with the car level and engine running with gearbox warm, allow the excess to drain out, refit the centre plug. If nothing comes out then add 1/2 litre and repeat.

Your 2012 car uses AW-1 / jws3324 spec juice…..
