haha fair play, basically it'll feel stiff to rotate.

you cant really tell with the wheel on cos the mass of the wheel helps it overcome the stiffness

I've had the car jacked up and this wheel does not freely rotate... It feels like a binding brake but the wheel doesn't get hot like a binding brake!

It does sound very much like a bearing has disintegrated.

XC70s are very sure-footed when stepping off the line. When they go FWD they scrabble for grip when pulling out at junctions (because electronics think drive's going rearwards when it isn't, perhaps?) and once gripped they aren't keen to change direction, hence comments about torque steer as an accompaniment.

As its an XC70 the following may be worth checking.

With the car jacked up safely - grasp the prop shaft (that takes drive from the front to the rear diff) at the front end just behind the front CV joint and move it up and down and side to side. There should be no appreciable movement. Wear in the front CV joint on the prop shaft can cause a clanking noise and vibration through the car.

The front CV joint on the prop shaft on the XC70 is very near to the cat convertor and over time the grease in the joint bakes because of the heat and loses its lubricating qualities - the joint soon wears and can begin to bind up, clank and produce vibration.

Good news is that the front joint is a serviceable part - bad news is that nothing else (centre support or rear CV joint) is. New prop shafts from Volvo are £1000 plus - I bought a new shaft for about £350 from a specialist in the Midlands when I found the rear CV joint on mine was also Fubar. The replacement shaft came with serviceable joints front and rear and a centre support bearing that can be greased and replaced.

That's the sort of thing that worries me! The car is going to my mechanic on Monday so we'll see!

This is very much a workhorse / I'm not bothered about having AWD. I'm assuming it's cheaper to turn it into a FWD car?

Ok... Development!

Took the car out this morning - the bearing type noise has completely gone. It came back intermittently before turning into a LOUD squeal. Really sounds like NSF wheel area & the loud squeal starts around 5mph and vanishes at 30+mph.

Nothing around that wheel is hot.

Removal of the prop shaft won't cause any issues - other than not having AWD capability.

I removed the propshaft on mine while I sourced a replacement and had no problems with dashboard warning lights etc.
