Need advise again - D5 engine and autobox - prospective purc
Hi all,
I’m looking to view a prospective purchase in the next couple of days and am looking for any weakspots in the engine/gearbox area. The car is a ‘59’plate with a Euro 5 D5 engine. I have no knowledge of this lump, any potential issues to look for? As to the autobox, I read in the P2 section that they are renowned for clunkiness as they age due to lack of maintenance. Is this still an issue on this era car with about 170k on it? I’ve only had manuals upto now. Thank you muchly. Last edited by reggit; May 21st, 2020 at 18:21. |

-Check the timing belt has been changed
-Check the aux belts & tensioner have been changed Replace the above if they haven't been done, as failure of any of these parts can cause serious engine damage. I'd recommend using genuine Volvo parts, not the cheap aftermarket ones. However, the D5 engine is generally highly reliable. Gearbox wise, the TF80 is decent. Check whether there's any paperwork that suggests the transmission fluid has been changed. If not, it definitely needs to be done. Test drive the car through all the gears, it should be smooth. If you feel severe clunks or notice any kind of shift flaring, as in the gearbox doesn't really know what its doing, then walk away. My Dad's V70 has 156,000 miles on it. The gear changes are silky smooth, but the transmission fluid has been changed. If you do purchase the car, make the transmission service part of the maintenance regime. It doesn't need to be changed every year as such, probably every 35k or so if you don't do any towing. If its used for towing, then change it every 25k or so & that'll keep her happy.

Thanks,
So they still have the issue that a failed aux belt derails the cam belt. Great info! Do you know if the e5 engine has the same troublesome swirl flap arrangement as the e4? Does this box use the same 3309 fluid as the earlier ones? |

Mine is very similar. 59 plate D5 but euro4 with 160k.
Have to say it drives beautifully, but I do keep ontop of the maintenance. Cambelt, aux belts and tensioners changed as required, plus auto transmission fluid changed regularly. If you don't have documented evidence of these items being addressed then budget for them. Aux belt is so, so important (I had an aux belt snap on my XC60 taking out the cambelt and trashing the head - expensive!!). To quote Clan, "54000 MILES or ten years that's the official Volvo interval". Cambelt is 10 years or 108k but I'd check this with an official source. Auto box isn't the sharpest but it is smooth and reliable and suits the car. Again, keep ontop of the maintenance and it should be fine.

Thanks again.
Supposed to have full Volvo service history - I know they don’t touch the box fluid - so hopefully ok for belts. Checked it with Marc on the spec check thread - it doesn’t! So something I need to look at, hopefully it’s been to independents that know what they doing. Looks a good car from the pics, I’ll update if I can get to see it. |

TF-80SC autobox uses JWS3309 for my year XC70. About 7 litres I remember. I do a dump and replace (about 3 litres) but Gibbons method is best if you're up to it.
Strangely my XC60 has the TF-80SC box but ATF spec. is AW1. Don't know why the difference but is check your handbook for spec. to be sure. Look forward to some pictures and also of your LC!!

Indeed, the belts are a common issue. Don't forget to change the tensioner! I wouldn't just presume that the belts have been done, especially as you say its 'supposed' to have Volvo history (It either has or it hasn't). Check if there's any paperwork/Invoice's for servicing etc with the car & if there's no mention of the timing belt, aux belts & tensioner being replaced, then I'd recommend getting them done fairly soon.
I think your car will still take JWS3309 trans fluid, but I'm not certain on that to be honest. I know that Volvo changed the trans fluid type in recent/newer models to JWS3324, but I don't think your car being a '59' plate will fall into that bracket. Your best bet would be to check the owners manual to see what's listed in there. As for the swirl flaps, I'm not sure about whether the euro 5's have them.

It’s a V70 r-design SE Premium (didn’t know there was such a thing) with a ridiculously long spec list, how much is still working I won’t know until I can plug my dice in.
Copied this from Marcs lookup on the spec thread.
