Smile Retrofitting cruise control to Ph2 1.9 diesel

Just some part numbers and pics which might help anyone planning to retrofit cruise to Phase 2 cars, in particular the 1.9D.

For phase 2 diesels, and maybe for others (maybe someone else can comment), the pieces needed are:
  1. Indicator stalk with cruise control switches
  2. Brake pedal cut out
  3. Clutch cut out (should be fitted already - check)
  4. Software update for CEM

I ordered the cruise control kit for my car from Rufe at FRF, part number 30618580.

I now realise that I did not need to go to this expense, and could have salvaged the two extra pieces of hardware I actually ended up needing:
  1. Brake pedal cutout switch, part number 9146505
  2. Indicator stalk, part number 30618230

The sound insulating panel comes out easily enough, it needs to be gently persuaded to free on passenger side.

The plastic shroud behind the steering wheel is a bit more tricky to get off, with tabs behind the wheel:

and where the top and bottom half fit together that need to be carefully pried apart:

Two stalks:

The third and extra plug for the stalk should be neatly taped to the column:

and similarly with the brake cut out. This just push fits. Be sure to depress the brake pedal before fitting a new one, and release it gently once in place. I let my brake pedal slam back, and was greeted with a sickening crunch as the cutout switch "self adjusted", or at least that's what the manual says... It's working ok still anyway... The black plastic piece is the cutout, and the wiring connected to it was neatly taped to the other loose wire, the footwell light connector.

The clutch cut out is very hard to see or photograph, but it should look similar to the brake one, and is in here...

Success!

I got the car back from the dealer this evening, and despite some grumbles about not being able to upload the required software as easily as they are with newer cars, it's all working a charm! It cost a few quid (€325 for the software installed, plus over €200 for the kit), but I am happy with it :-)

I have a spare wiring loom, 30618133, and a plain indicator stalk left over, which I'll be listing in For Sale section soon.

That's simply extortion and exactly why I have all the components installed but not the software. It was around €190 + VAT back in 2010.

Well done all the same

Default Late is the hour in which this conjurer chooses to appear!

I know this is an older thread.

However I'm having a bad appetite to add cruise controlling to my old Volvo S40 MKI Petrol (1999)

Before even checking. I'd like to know, if anyone, at any era, tried this before on this particular model.

And I'm not clear about "Clutch and Brake Cut out" is it something that should be mechanically available feature from factory?

I am pretty certain that all Phase 1 models, including the earlier diesels have the mechanical/vacuum cruise control. So if your car already has the pre existing wiring, then your should be able to install cruise control. And it will be a lot cheaper than the Phase 2 1.9D, as you don't need any programming. Just plug and play
With regards to your question about "Clutch and Brake Cut out", the holes and areas where the CC brackets and bolts need to go, are already there.

You can get a CC kit for about £60-£70

How to check throttle body for CC unit?
There should be a some sort of a automatic throttle control unit there right?

I just check there are two that kind of units percent.

The larger one I guess its the idle air speed control valve.

However other electric motor kind of unit also present, I'm not sure whether its the CC unit or the throttle position sensor.

Can someone post me a pic please?

Thanks

There are no cruise control systems on the engine itself. The automatic throttle is controlled with a vacuum servo connected directly to the accelerator pedal in the car. So the physical pedal will move when the cruise control is engaged. The vacuum pump to drive this is mounted on the bulkhead next to the wiper motor, all things you will have to buy. I have a 1998 1.8 V40 and shall take some pictures of the setup for you.

The two units you are looking at on the engine itself are the idle control valve and throttle position sensor. Nothing to do with cruise control.

The parts you will need for your car are:
- Vacuum pump
- Vacuum lines
- Cruise control module
- Accelerator control servo
- Brake and clutch cut out switches
- Indicator stalk with cruise switch

Actually, this is the case with all the petrol models (except the 1.8i GDI) and phase 1 (1996-200) 1.9TD

The Phase 2 (2000-2004) 1.9D and 1.8i GDI models don't use the vacuum pump and accelerator pedal servo. Both the 1.9D and 1.8i have fly by wire accelerator pedals and the main ECU is the one running the CC. That is why you need to take them to a Volvo dealer to enable the CC function.

Hi,
I recently bought a S40 1.6 - 109hp, 09/1999. Like everyone else here, I'm also trying to channel my inner Xzibit!
What would it take to fit cc to it?
Regards
