Default Irish plate may be what the doctor ordered !

Hello..
I am thinking of buying one of the cheap irish plates .
I have never had anything to do with this type of thing before..The guy on the phone want's my M.O.T. and V5 and he said £80 for swansea and £50 for him and thats it !
The thing is that my 740 estate is great and maybe a "year disguise" is what it needs..
Have any of you done this ? If so is it as easy as the seller say's ?
And how long does it take...
Thanks
Steve

I understood from these Irish plates was the the car had to be Registered in Ireland, as your car is not in Ireland then ?

I could be wrong but before I parted with my money I would check with DVLC in Swansea - only a phone call.

All I know is that my mother-in-law had NI plates on her old Rover and it was registered in Reading so that bit works fine. Please do keep NI and the Republic apart.

Yes, Northern Ireland plates are easily transferred to the rest of the UK (note, I said 'rest of'!!!). Irish ones, however are no longer transferable to the UK or any other country, no more than French ones would be! (At one time they were transferable to Northern Ireland and possibly from there to the rest of te UK) Hence that potentially valuable number MIN 1 never was seen outside Tralee (I believe that is where it came from).

MIN 1 would be a Northern Irish registration. Southern Irish (Eire) registrations all feature Z until the new Euro type registrations came in.

All the best, Peter

Not so! My current (Northern Ireland) C70 is a TCZ number - the numbers in Ireland, both North and South, were allocated pre 1921 and the I's (which were unique to Ireland within the UK at that time) were found on both sides of the border. 'IN' was County Kerry and the letter M was simply a pre-fix to provide more number permutations. The system was subsequently revised to provide more permutations and all of these numbers had a 'Z', both North and South. But in Ireland the old numbers still exist only where the car carrying them still exists. The Irish never permitted transferring numbers from one car to another. Hence even in Ireland, MIN 1 was not on a Mini, but, I believe, on a Ford Anglia!

All the Irish and Northern Irish county letters (which we still use in the North)can be found at http://www.asharte.freeserve.co.uk/veh_tab.htm

Hi.
I have just contacted the sellers in Ireland and he assures me that there will be no prob with the transfer of a NUI **** number..
The cost is low ( well £50 and £80 for DVLA ) I have sent the form away with money and M.O.T and V5 log book..
I hope everything will be ok.
He also said he will send me the plates to save me having new ones made over here.
I have never done this before and to be honest I havent got a clue.
This won't affect my insurance premium will it ?
Sorry to ask silly questions but " I don't Know"
Thanks
Steve
