Trust me, the camber will have been altered, the bolts are designed to allow movement of the hub in relation to the strut, this is how the camber is adjusted. Even tiny fractions of a millimetre will make a difference at the edge of the wheel.

Default Massive thank you

I wanted to thank you all. We've recently started getting ABS warnings. The pads have plenty of meat left on them. I checked the ABS reluctor ring and couldn't believe it had cracked. I had to change the front droplinks anyway.

Massive thanks to all of you. I just unclipped the ABS sensor cable from the 2 mounting points and removed the upper strut bolt, loosened the lower strut bolt and the hub fell towards me. I wiggled the driveshaft a bit to get the spline out of the hub. Refitted the bolt ASAP to prevent CV grease oozing out of the spline and removed all of the rust and filed it down to bright metal. I bought the replacement rings off Ebay. Refitting was easy with your advice after gently heating with the gas torch for making creme brullee. Ordered new hub bolts from Volvo, but for the initial test-drive, no more ABS problems!

So I'm currently on with this...

Gently push the axle out?? HAHAHA

Mine isn't budging at all. Any tips before I lose my rag and beat the crap out of it with a sledge hammer?

I know it should come off as the bearing was replaced not long since (2 years ago)

Mine didn't come out still. Tried to use a hydraulic pull in the garage but no movements. Garage said they are going to use heat but if they do then we have to change the bearings as well. So let it like that.
My advice is get the hub out and go to a garage with a very lots of ton pressure and push it away.
Don't waste your money in smaller puller , it won't but budge.
Keep it posted .

The main dealers and probably some garages have a special induction heater that can free the parts other forms of heating cannot affect.

It's getting periodic blastings of release squirt... and for the sake of £20 I can live with that. It's one of those tools I had before I moved 2 years ago... just can't find the bugger now.

....having just done a front hub....

Whilst searching the net for how to get the hub off last week I came across a few mentions of catastrophically-stuck axles. One solution mentioned was to use (place) paraffin wax on a heated axle. I found no explanation for why, but it occurs to me (by way of hypothesis at least) that, in principle, if the entire thing (axle, bearing, hub, and all) is heated and then only the axle itself cooled (pretty quickly), there would be a differential and the axle might be able to pop out (after it cools and shrinks relative to the housing which remains hot and expanded). So, I would guess/hypothesise that people are referring to using paraffin (wax) placed directly on the heated axle as a very localised conductive or evaporative coolant (?).

In support of this hypothesis, I do find that paraffin wax is a noted 'thermal conductor' (but I find no mention of it being used for selective metal cooling).

Never tried it, no idea of the chemistry (might be very dangerous/explosive for all I know).... but somebody around here might be able to confirm/deny....

(A similar idea is often advocated for fitting the ABS rings, only in this case the ring is heated and the axle is cold, and no paraffin wax is used).

One further note: when I bought the hub at my local Volvo dealership, the parts department supplied me with an axle bolt on the presumption that I might hammer the crap out of my existing bolt - to get the axle out, I presume - and need a new one.... very thoughtful of them indeed (and not the first time they've helped like this).

I.e., my local Volvo parts guys suggest (imply) not hammering the axle retainer bolt without a replacement to hand....! but I would also interpret this as an implicit suggestion that hammering this bolt would be better than hammering the axle itself....
