S60 Service: 78000Miles at 74400??
Hi I have a 2001 S60 2.0 T S. I last serviced it in December 2004 at 66,000 miles. Thought next service was due in 12000 miles at 78,000 miles, but my service light has been coming on since December 2005. On contacting Volvo I was told service intervals were 12000 miles OR 12 months.
It seems the onboard computer does not 'compute' anything when it comes to service - it just counts down 12 months or 12000 miles and lights up again. Just need some (informed) opinions on if this is necessary. I thought sticking to mileage intervals would have been good enough. |

Not quite sure what you're getting at here, yes the service interval is 12,000 miles or 12 months, but it has been 12 months since you had the car serviced so it's due a service and that's what the computer is telling you.
The computer does exactly what you say i.e. counting 12,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first then triggers the service light but that's what it's supposed to do. Does this clear it up as I'm not quite sure what you're asking? Cheers, J |

Ah, the old service intervals chestnut ! They do seem to be kinda arbitrary, don't they? Even my dealer (used for years and one of the best IMHO) was doesn't agree with them (but does observe them) - the 05 models onwards have an 18k/12 month interval which is biased to the fleet/repmobile users - I do around 10k a year and since the car uses fully synthetic oil you get minimal wear, and could easily wait until the 18000 miles point. However, come a warranty claim and both driver and dealer would have problems claiming...
I understand the onboard computer does monitor for things other than counting 12 months or miles - it monitors engine hours (although I guess the mileage limit will be hit first) Also, it has the ability to check your bank account and if you have too much money it'll call a service that will correct that anomaly....(OK I made that one up. Any service will do that!) One thing to note - the cars come out the factory with a 6000 mile limit set which should be adjusted through VADIS during the PDI. If you reset using the odometer method, it will only give you another 6000miles; the dealer has to reset it through VADIS for the relevant interval. As to sticking to mileage intervals, I guess it all depends on how you drive your car. |

12 months, 12,000 miles or 750 engine hours
