Gearbox compatibility
I have a early 2003 XC90 D5 which needs a new gearbox. I think it's had a second hand gearbox already as the part number on it is P8675151 but VADIS lists it as 8251720. I am assuming that the P number on the gearbox label is the part number?
So far I have only been able to locate 2nd user and re-con boxes from 04 and later cars which have a different part number. One difference I can see is the wiring connectors - on my car the gearbox has a flying lead but on the later cars it has a connector on the valve body casing. Does anyone know if the later transmission can be fitted (probably swapping the valve body wiring loom in the process) ? Many Thanks Richard |

What is wrong with your box is it not repairable by a gearbox specialist,
I would imagine any AWD auto would fit aslong as its a AW55 box and not the newer TF80

The previous owner has had several attempts at finding it - I have over £1k of invoices for a recon valve body and a torque converter. I am not sure what the original problem was, but I suspect that he's been ripped off as looking at the bolts in the engine bay - I don't think the gearbox has been off. I was hoping that any AW55 would fit but there is definitely a wiring change around '04. If it is just a case of swapping the loom over - I can deal with that. Richard |

It got sorted - the gearboxes are the same but you need to swap over the wiring loom, speed sensors (x2) and temp sensor plus the gear selector position switch. This is easier than it sounds, all connectors are colour coded, but you do have to open and re-seal the valve body cover. About an hours work taking it steady.
I did this over 4 years ago now, have done 60k since - no issues.
