Default About to buy 960

I have just been offerd a 960 turbo eatate with 55000 miles on the clock the guy wants £1000.00 for it . it has the following faults though the aircon switch keeps flashing and no hot air gets into the car also there is a switch on the side of the auto gear lever and when you press the button nothing happens. the person selling it told me of the faults and is not trying to hide anything would these be costly items to fix i can pay for the car but i will not have much money left over to spend on it.

Don't know about the air-con, but the button on the side of the gear stick is for the overdrive. It's like a 4th gear and lowers the revs at cruising speed. The first place to look would be the o/d relay which is behind the fuses. On my 940, it's the middle row, drivers side, yours will prob be the same. If you open it up you may find the soilder has broken, this is what normally happens.

Talking 960 Turbo Estate

Hello

Can't comment on the AirCon - ours is disconnected and likely to stay that way!
My wife's 'new' 1991 960 Turbo Auto with 175K miles is the best Volvo we have ever owned - sure we've had some problems due mostly to the previous owner relying on a pretty poor garage for 'maintenance' (he spent a fortune!) - but it's fast durable daily transport for £600, is much too fast for this old scroat, and seems more economical than my old carburetted 740

I'd go buy it!

Regards

Jim

960 - I think fuses are under a panel near the driver's side front A pillar - neatly illuminated. I'm still looking for the relays! - Haynes don't do a manual for the 960.......

Smile 960 4 or 6 cylinder

Me again

You don't mention the year of the car - but with 55K it could be the straight 6 cylinder which I believe is really something in terms of smoothness and power

We'll soldier on with the old red block 4

Best of luck

Thumbs up

IF its a genuine 55k AND there are no other problems, then I'd bite his arm off at that price.

If its a 960 turbo, then it will have a 2.3l 4 cylinder turbo engine good for about 180bhp. If its a six cylinder, then it'll either have a 2.5l 6 cylinder engine (175bhp) or a 3.0l 24 valve 6 cylinder engine (204bhp).

The 6 cylinder engines are super smooth, powerful and refined. Downsides are slightly less economical - say 22mpg average, and parts are more expensive than 4 cylinder version.

I've got a short buyers guide on my old website which might interest you - http://www.sheffieldsam.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

Good luck, and welcome to the fold

Default Re Hot Air

I don't think anyone has mentioned that the lack of hot air is probably just one of the vacumn pipes that control the air distribution leaking.

I too would bite the hand off at that price. My 960 3.0 estate was the best car i have had. If you don't want it let me know.
