Supermarket Petrol
Has anyone noticed any difference in the mpg they get when using different "brands" of petrol.
For a long time I used Morrissons unleaded and averaged 26mpg. I switched to Tesco's 2 months ago by fluke and, across the same trips as before, am getting 28.6. I'm doing nothing different! Anyone else got similar experiences or comments? |

I can't comment on a Volvo, as I don't have one yet. However, my current car seems to be very picky with fuel. It hates BP Ultimate and returned rubbish fuel economy (low 20's) and ran like a dog.
Shell Optimax (Now V-Power) is much better, but I find that it smells (bizarrely) of cat wee Esso super is pretty good, but my current favourite is Tesco 99. I can quite happily get high 20's early 30's on a long run if I stay off the turbo! My dad on the other hand has tried almost every brand of diesel he can in his C-Max TDCi and finds that BP diesel is the best - returning early 50's... Justin |

I have found with different marques Esso gives me the best fuel consumption for long, fast motorway runs.
Round town I don't notice much difference from named brand to named brand. I steer clear of supermarket fuels as I find I do get one or two MPG less with them.

Supermarket petrol
My V40 hates Sainsbury's petrol but is quite happy on BP - I read somewhere that supermarket petrol contains ethanol (about 5%) to keep the price down - not sure how true this is!

Interesting comments about the differences in formulation. Probably explains why my Amazon has started pinking on occasions after a recent fill-up - certainly wasn't doing it before

The quality of the fuels do vary to some degree between various companies as they all use different amounts and types of additives etc etc.
Personally I run all of my cars on Shell V-Power as I do find a noticeable difference for the better with it. The economy seems about same but better on motorways (I don't have a mpg computer on mine) and on the XKR the economy is noticeably better under the same conditions when using Shell Vpower for town driving. When forced to use something else, I stick with BP U/L. (The BP super U/L makes no difference over the normal BP U/L in my cars), but they do run well enough none the less. I have used Total and Asda fuels in the BMW and whilst the car still drove fine, it didn't have the silky and fractionally sharper feel of the other fuels. The only times I used cheap fuels (supermarket) is when I have a courtesy/loan vehicle so I can't offer a valid comparison. |

tried every super unleaded in my 440 turbo and all i get is 12-15 mpg so i just use anything thats flammable ie normal unleaded and get 22-28 mpg i remember all the rubbish when 4 star was been fased out and people spent loads on converting there car to run on unleaded and for what nothing most cars didnt need it!!!! big con!!! just like super unleaded my mate runs a t5r on normal unleaded and spends 12 pound on octane 10 boost which he buys every month or so saves him bundles and his car gets 28 regulary !!!!!!! big con you all decide i know where my vote goes....
