Default Volvo On Call - almost inaudible

I've just installed VOC on a used 2014 S80 - but as it happens this is the first installation.
Achieved through the dealer as required, but with me sitting at the dealer's workstation providing details e.g. email address. Then out to the car for more of the same at the infotainment screen via "MY CAR" and "Settings" and "VOC configuration".
Eventually graduated to pressing the VOC button.
NB by this time the dealer had exited the vehicle with "This is all taking much longer than I expected"!! Honestly I could write a book.
Connection was achieved, but the lady at VOC was almost inaudivble to me, and apparently I was almost inaudible to her. I had expected the microphone/loudspeaker setup to be the same as Bluetooth phone, i.e. pretty clear and controllably loud - but the speaker seemed to be somewhere low and behind the central console and I haven't a clue where the microphone is located. Each party could hear the other, but both parties were absolutely straining.
Question 2: where are these items (mic/speaker) located on a 2014 S80, and are they indeed different, as they seemed, to the usual Bluetooth phone setup?
But, more important, Question 1: how can I control speaker volume and mic sensitivity?
At the moment, the prospect of using VOC in a real life needy situation, if not actually SOS, is not a confident one. As for SOS, which I have not tested (strictly deprecated which of course I understand) - who knows?
Thank you for any illumination / advice / similar experience.

I don't know about the Volvo On-call system, but vehicles with E-call systems approved now must use a separate system to the regular audio/bluetooth setup - presumably partly to ensure it still functions if an aftermarket stereo is fitted.

It's possible the Volvo system doesn't use the normal Bluetooth mix and speaker.
