Default 1998 V40 Service light Reset

Hi Everyone
I know that there are existing threads about this but none seem to work for me.
I have done all the switching on and pushing in the odometer reset but my service light will not enter the flashing mode so no joy.
Out of frustration I went to IN-N-OUT and had a service so they could reset the light. Job done says the engineer and off I goes.
On comes the light and I return to the garage!!
Sorry says the engineer and he resets it again!
Off goes the light. O.K.
Switch off the ignition and restart the car and there it is again.
Must be your computer mate!
Thanks for nothing! 100 quid for a crap oil change and a couple of filters. Could have done it myself.
So any ideas where the service light gets its information from?
The good news is that the service light goes off after 2 mins but it is annoying every time I switch on.

I have just found this bit of info that might be of help:

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/reset-40.shtml

Is it definatly the service light and not another engine check/ABS/fault light?

On the 98 and before cars you need a reset tool, pc, or a trip to volvo, no button pressing arm waving and tounge pulling will do.

I am guessing it would fit into the port driver side next to where your left knee is - unless its different on earlier cars

Agreed, you need an OBD service light reset tool. I had a 1999 S40 which was a simple "push-the-button" job, but earlier cars need a proper reset. Draper used to do one, should be available from Draper dealers, but they're nearer £50 than £10...

I now have the Torque app on my generic smart-phone plus a bluetooth OBD sender which was £14 off eBay. Allows me to reset just about anything!
