Default Why does my T4 sound like a old steam train?

When releasing the throttle when driving I get a sound, that the only way I can describe it is, is like the chugging sound of a steam train. I have recently removed the bsr induction kit from the car thinking that this would get resolve this sound, but it hasn't, with the induction kit on this noise was loads louder, but I just thought it was normal, hence why i'm a little confused that its still making the sound but not as loud. I know that something is not right as I owned a T4 a few years ago, and i dont know if this sound is related, but boost feels pretty pathetic compared to the previous T4 I owned. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated, and if there is any advice or help, just be aware that I am a bit of a novice in regards to engines etc, but not fully useless

Firstly welcome in

I would suggest checking the play in the turbo shaft as well as the actuator and shaft, the turbo might be worn which is causing the odd sound. If those are ok then it might be something as simple as a boost leak somewhere, does it only make a sound when you accelerate?

It only makes the sound when lifting the throttle, at low revs there is very little sound, its only really when giving it a bit of peddle. I also cannot hear any whistling sound from the turbo, apologises for the bad terminology

Welcome
I'd look for boost leaks first of all. Have you got a boost gauge on the car?
Also there is a really good Volvo Garage in Chippenham (MRG) that are really trust worthy.

Have you checked the hoses coming off the intercooler?

If I was you I'd take it down to MRG they would tell you if you had any leaks for sure. Well worth giving them a call. I found a leak by shear luck I checked the top hose of the intercooler and found a slight bit of oil under it and it turned out to be a split hose

Like I said in original post, I am a bit of a novice, but will check hoses to intercooler and check actuator shafts in the morning with suitable light

It is a bit of a mission for me to get to Chippenham, but i want to get my motor back to running its best, so if I cant find a problem myself then i might have to bite the bullet and take a trip over there
