Another job for the to do list! my Mondeo 1.8 dies a few years back due to sudden loss of coolant - metal pipe at front round gearbox rusted through! Don't want to revisit that experience again!

The cause is the hose clip around the lower radiator hose on the radiator end , the clip goes rusty and breaks , the pressure in the system ( 20 + psi ) will then blow the hose off and your coolant is gone in a matter of a couple of seconds . If this happens on the motorway which is more likely due to the higher rpm and hence pressure , you barely have time to pull over and stop before any damage occurs .
I would advise anybody with a S/V40 4 cylinder petrol engine to check their lower radiator hose clips / Best fit a new one anyway , a better quality stainless steel one as fitted as standard on the Swedish cars .... get a top hose clip for say a S60 T5 or something ...

This is not only applicable to older 1997 cars but ALL of them , one of the cars i saw was a 2003 .....
So it seems we have a nasty problem developing here
Check those hose clips .......
Thanks for this info. Got to check my V40 on an 03 reg.
Do you or someone on the forum know of someone who is keen to sort my S40, on an 05 reg, has the 1.8 FORD FOCUS motor as it has no compression on cylinder 3. Cost effectively please.
Maybe the valves as I have done all the checks. Or it's for sale at a reasonable price

Default Thanks a bunch

Just checked mine and it so rusty and could actually give way any time soon,
Couldn't loose it so I cut it and go a stainless steel type and replace.
can be done from under without removing the radiator.

Default Hose Clip Warning

Thanks so much for this warning! I've just checked the clip on my 1999 S40 1.6 and it IS corroded.

I have just ordered a MIKALOR W4 all stainless hose clamp, size 40 - 43mm, from e-bay seller jml-henderson at £2.50 inc 2nd class P&P.

Has anyone else tried using a MIKALOR clip?

with all due respect , thats more likely to fail than your rusty clip ! Please buy the proper volvo quality clip , probably cheaper too ..
