Default Anyone Replaced Rear Brake Back Plate?

Volvo 940 estate, 1992, 2.0L petrol non turbo. 210,000 miles.
Rear brakes are ATE. The "back plates" or "protection plate" to use Volvo's term are badly corroded and disintegrating. I've obtained genuine replacements (part no. VO1330432) from my dealer. (I'm advised that they are not handed left or right ) Now I have to fit them. I've been unable to find any information to help with this. It appears that the rear axle half shaft will have to be removed to achieve this which would appear to require the removal of the half shaft retaining plate then withdraw the half shaft. In the past I've withdrawn half shafts relatively easily from my Morris Marina when the bearings needed replacing, (which was quite frequently due to towing a caravan.) There is no oil leak from the oil seals at present. Will I be able to do this without disturbing/damaging the oil seal or is it highly likely that the oil seal will be damaged and need replacing and are there any other issues which I need to be aware of and/or prepared for ?
Plus, 1) Any particular grease required on the seal and bearing and 2) Haynes advise applying a sealant between the axle tube and half shaft retaining plate. Is there a particular sealant required ?

Default Cut them in half?

Would it be possible to cut them in half and put an extra bit in the middle before bolting back in? I seem to remember doing something similar on the front of a Morris Minor decades ago when adding Riley 1.5 front brakes.

Thanks Roger. I'd thought about that but would prefer not to unless it's absolutely essential. As it passed it's MOT last week with no advisories and I managed to remove, check and re grease the pads I'll be leaving it until next spring anyway.
