I download to PC, then transfer to USB, install in the car with no issues.

What was frustrating is that my XC60 was in the Dealership for two days last week (36k Service & Rear Brake Discs and Pads), they updated the car software, but not the maps!

Dealers don't update maps or any of the audio units unless there is issues as its not part of the service software package due to the size and time constraints involved,

An IHU (cd player unit) upgrade can take anything upto an hour to download into car then the map update aswell, would be looking 2 hours per car at least,

The new spa platform cars have the maps loaded at Pdi as they don't come from the factory with any maps loaded but it is them upto the customer to keep update them

And my problem was....

Windows was adding a system information folder to the USB when it was getting ejected, you cant delete this by formatting or by deleting in explorer.

I did eventually through the command prompt after selecting the drive reference rmdir "system volume information" s /q/

Just in case anyone gets the same issue.

I have always left that hidden folder there, never caused an issue.

It would only work with it removed for some reason, and if you deleted it and plugged the USB back in it appeared again.

Odd, I used the same USB and procedure I always do and its worked first time.

I just wonder if windows updates have seen it sneaking something else onto the drive.

It will always reappear as it is required for the OS to recognise the drive.

I’m suggest it is more to do with where the data ended up on the drive through the copying process than the folder causing the issue - after all there a many thousands of people who download these maps and they don’t delete that folder yet manage to update the maps without issue.

The fact you had used the drive before is indicative of the problem you have as these drives wear and it could simply be that a bit of data was written to a sector that is starting to fail.

Could be.

How long is this taking to install for those who've done it?

I've done 2 previous updates and on those I had a progress bar across the screen. I stuck the USB in this morning, pressed OK and went to have my breakfast. When I came out about 30 mins later, the screen was blank except for the air-con temps at the bottom.

I then drive the hour or so to work.

It's now been that way for nearly two hours but the USB is still flashing randomly so does appear to be getting accessed

It normally takes about 90 mins or so, iirc it actually says when it starts how long it will take?

If there is an issue, such as you appear to have, I suggest you remove the drive and wait for it to ask you to reinsert the media. It will restart from where it stopped last time it was running. This is handy as it lets you stop and start the journey

To get around the system shutting down leave the car door open (you will get annoying boings though)
