Bulb Failure Light
A couple of times recently the bulb failure light has come on but went off after I flicked the light switch. As it never shows with the ignition on (engine not running) as the other warning lights do I just assumed it didn't work. Should it be activated by the ignition switch? The handbook is slightly ambiguous but if it doesn't show as the other warnings do how is it possible to know if it works?
Not a particularly important matter, but I do like things to work as they should if possible. |

Double element DTR / sidelamps at the front maybe. One element gone?

It's very sensitive to small differences in resistance of different bulbs on the same circuit - brakes or sidelights especially. Even bulbs of two different makes can trigger it.
I've also sometimes noticed that it starts to come on sometimes a short time before a bulb fails, as if the bulb's resistance changes in the run-up to failure even though it continues to work for a while. But if yours doesn't show as working when initially turning the ignition on it sounds as if the unit itself might be at fault. As with all Volvo electrics, the first test is to try waggling the connector, and if that works then reassemble with a touch of proper electrical grease to stop it happening again. |

You probably know this, but if it's like mine it comes on with the ignition and should go out with the first touch of the brake pedal if all is well.

As previously stated a slight difference in current can make this occur. About 12 yrs ago I backed into a hedge and had to replace the entire rear light bank with no problem. Since I never learn, about three years ago I backed into the same hedge and broke the same side once again, now all light function but the bulb light always comes on whenever I turn on the running or parking lamps. I purchased the second rear light assembly off of ebay.
