Headlight Washers stopped working
I believe they should activate every 5th spray but after doing a lot of tests on a long drive today mine have stopped working.
I found fuse 3 for the headlight washers in the engine bay and changed it but they still aren’t working. I am thinking what else do I need to check. Could it be a blockage although possibly unlikely as both aren’t working. Then I was thinking could it be the wiper stalk itself? And then obviously the pump for the headlight washers. Any help greatly appreciated as a quick search reveals that this doesn’t seem to be much of a common problem on the XC90’s. Oh and forgot to mention that they were working a couple of months ago and I have halogen headlights. Thanks

I have exactly the same issue and really must get around to doing something about it! Thing is, the washer bottle no longer empties after 3 washes.... so meh!
The windscreen washer and headlight washer use separate pumps, both at the bottom of the reservoir. They just push in as I recall. They are behind the RH front wheel arch liner. The pump is probably either broken or blocked by sludge in the reservoir. You can use Ford replacements - cheaper than Volvo branded.

All sorted now a new pump from Volvo for £57 and an hours labour at the local garage and they are working again.
I have seen other threads about getting the same pump from ford for half the price but rather than complicating things just went with Volvo.

Chunk,
I had the same issue with the windscreen washers, although the headlight washers were still working, as was the rear washer. I pulled out the pump ( I took the trouble of removing the 1/4 bumper cover, drivers side, which made life a bit easier, and certainly shed more light into that area) and sure enough the filter/gasket was blocked with sludge on one side(the windscreen side) of the pump, I cleaned it easily and it was already to go. Be prepared to get a wet arm when pulling pump out, just wiggle it slowly and pull away for the tank, mine came out fairly easily). I then tested it, and it worked perfectly for three squirts, and then the pressure - which was now great - blew the back off the non return valve T under the drivers washer jet under the bonnet, (these are the sort of plastic that goes brittle with age and the heat from the engine bay I assume)so I renewed that(from Volvo, although cheaper ebay parts are available) and now all good. see photos attached. Photos. 1. Location of windscreen and rear washer pump on rear of tank. Headlight pump on side of tank (bigger pump) 2. 1/4 Bumper panel removed to allow greater access, risk of breaking old brittle plastic clips so only of you have to. 3.The filter gasket, removed, it's very soft rubber be careful when cleaning. |
