How many miles ago was 6 months ??
You get more fuel contamination from the DPF in winter, so it can easily finish up that you are using a 5w20. Most new Volvo engines are supposed to use an 0w30 that is very close to the 40 category. In general terms if you get a hot idle or cold start rattle, try the following: 1/ Change the oil & filter and make sure to use a real Volvo filter 2/ If that fails, see what happens if you move up one grade one grade to an 0 or 5w40. 3/ Try an idle only flush oil additive (Not if you already have any oil leaks) when changing the oil. PS: This does not sound like lifter tick, just thin hot oil causing what sounds like a bearing noise.

Today I changed oil to Shell Helix Ultra ACEA A5/B5 5W30. Prior to this I ran engine for 10 min with Liqui Molly Engine Flush.
Used Mann Oil filter (they make VOLVO oil filters). No change whatosoever - that ticking/rattling noise is still there. What I have noticed noise dissapears after 2000 rpm. Meanwhile I have found video from D5 engine with exatcly same noise, although owner is more worried about smoke from disptick and oil filler. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tl2HtGiuEQM Maybe bad injector then? |

Its not lifter/bearing noise
Its injectornoise BUT they are functioning ok according to the fuelcorrection figures Clean the solenoid connections of the injectors with contactspray and Try an injectorcleaner But dont expect anything major to improve noisewise To be honest : your engine sounds fine (google others) |

I'm having the very same noise I've narrowed it to a hydraulic lifter I'm going to tackle it this weekend the parts are cheap enough I was 100% it was injectors I spent a nice amount having them removed checked (one reconditioned ) new seals and then the same noise.
An easy way to verify if it's an injector is to remove the electrical connector one at a time whilst running if the noise doesn't go then it's not an injector solenoid clicking Alternatively if going down a hill turn off the key making the engine still turn for a few seconds if the noise doesn't go away its most likely a tappet I'll let you know has it improved after I replace the tappets I'm just trying to let you in on what I've learned without blowing money unnecessarily the noise I have is identical and in a built up area in low gear it's embarrassing 😫 |

Reconditioned injectors are kryptonite with this ecu with specified flow codings
The noise youre hearing isnt injectornoise but pressure spiked combustion noise due to both injectionadvance and to much fuel burning at once due to mismatching flow figures If the injector flows more than specified (and the ecu could now) you get too much fuel to early ,wich get time to mix and accumulate and burning all at once with a diesellike noise on steroids Diesel needs to be timed exactly so that it can burn right away during the injection so that fuel cant accumulate and create pressurespiking Last edited by 5cilinder; Apr 4th, 2016 at 18:17. |

There are some good videos on youtube how to check which lifters are bad without removing, just pressing on them. |

Bad lifters sound different on this engine (it gives the thugboat sound)
Your lifters are fine |

You shouldnt pull a connector on a running engine
I tell you again your engine runs healthy (google other d5ś) try the injector cleaner and the contactspray first Before you hound expensive goshts in the rest of the engine |
