2017 XC60 D4 - DPF / ERG trouble or myth
Afternoon all,
Just a question, I was considering moving up from my 2005 E3 D5 to a 2017 xc60 D4. Now diesel is not my favourite option even though I have been running a D5 for 8 years now. My D5 is pre DPF so it just goes on with short 10 mile journeys. Am I going to have trouble with the D4 VEA with 2 x 10 mile journeys per day? Basically there's not much choice of vehicles in general at the moment and it annoys me that the modern diesel requires distance to keep things like DPF's etc clean. But I look around at all my neighbours with diesels and I know for a fact that 95% of then do not cover long journeys on a regular basis, mostly local town journeys and I do not see them off the road getting their cars regen'd all the time. Any experience or advice on this appreciated so I do not move to a potential trouble situation. Thanks. |

I would say 10 miles is just enough to get it warm and that’s about it. Ideally you could do with longer trips every so often.
EGR is certainly an well known issue on these and still is I believe but it’s much better than it was. There is loads of info out there. There is also oil consumption issues which again was meant to be fixed but some are reporting oil consumption on higher mileage cars. Oil leaks are also common on this engine. I love the design of the new cars but what puts me off is the price of keeping them on the road. Your looking at over a £1000 to sort an egr fault out which is normally a new valve and cooler. We had a V60 with this engine and EGR and oil consumption issues meant it had to go. I think I’m hanging onto a 5 cylinder for as long as I can before trying another one
