S40 T5 value?
Morning all,
Hoping this is ok to put in general… I am seriously considering selling my S40 T5 but have no idea what it is really worth? I feel I overpaid for it a couple of years ago (£2800) but bought with my heart not my head, and I know I can’t really rely on anyone else doing the same. It’s a 54 plate T5, manual, silver, 99,500 miles, biscuit leather and walnut trim. Good bits - completely standard, runs perfectly, new clutch a few months back, long MOT, good branded tyres, good body work, has a parrot bt kit installed. Bad bits - alloys are ok, but have rim mounted wheel weights, interior is ok, but the dreaded headliner has sagged and spoils things. NS mirror does not heat, cd changer is dead - battery change issue I believe. Reason for selling is that I drive it 1-2k a year which is ridiculous, I just need a runaround really. Appreciate any advice or opinions - thanks! Alan |

I sold my 2004 S40 T5 4yrs ago for £1800 and it was nearly mint. It had a tiny spot of pain bubble on one wheel arch that needed attention but, bar that, everything worked perfectly. Ultimately, T5s are worth more to owners and enthusiasts than the average second hand buyer who, in modern times of shocking petrol prices, don't seem to have much love for them.
I'll be honest, I reckon you'll do well to get a 4 figure sum for it. It took me weeks to find a buyer for mine and that was for an extremely well cared for and sorted one. With a list of things to fix and another 4yrs gone by I fear what you get may be disappointing. The CD changer won't be anything to do with the battery. It's almost certain to be a failed mechanism which is either £600+ from a dealer or butcher a second hand one and transplant the mechanism onto your circuit board.

Alloys will need seeing to , refurb costs due to knock on weights - affect the price headliner that , last year was £600+ fitting +Vat at a main dealer, CD unit as above £600+ main dealer battery £100ish alternator £340+vat (main dealer + fit it yourself) all in your looking at a car that is going to "need" £1200+ worth of parts/work to get it to a decent condition where you could expect a decent sale price as it is now, with those issues,, sadly your not going to get anywhere near the £2800 you spent leaving you out of pocket, looking to buy a "runabout" car with reduced funds that probably wont be a volvo, and as such Wont have the safety Volvo's have, Wont be the same or anywhere Near the build quality, ride quality And most important of all Wont have the Same "smiles per gallon" your S40 T5 gives you , esp as you bought it (rightly) with the heart me,, spend the £ sorting the bits that concern You , keep it drive it 1-2k a year and Enjoy it V use a "runabout" far inferior car the Cost to fix Everything is going to be a Heck of a lot less than changing car to a "runabout" type ,which be honest you probably Wont like driving Anywhere near as much as you enjoy the S40... ### If your are ok with DIY car things and have a driveway and somewhere to work you Can take the car to bits, (swear) remove the headliner , (swear) re-upholster it and (Swear) refit it for a Lot less than main dealer costs, ditto the "battery charging issue" IF its the alternator, vida will tell you ditto the battery If its that CD unit,,if it doesnt fuss you leave it or fix it as above (fiddle+swear but do-able)

How the the headliner come out without removing front or rear screen, as required on most saloons? Can it be rotated and wiggled to get out out somehiw?

Thanks for the replies all.
It’s all pretty much as I guessed really, it’s probably the worst possible climate to sell into right now, I should just point out that the battery issue I mentioned wasn’t actually a battery issue, just that when the battery was changed, the cd changer tried to select beyond its limit and broke the gears (a relatively common issue I read about online) no way am I shelling out dealer money for that!!! (I’m more upset about my cds that are stuck in it) I will just diy a few bits and try not to dwell on the mid teen mpg and £330 rfl |

Maybe need to give the car a good old service to keep it a nice daily driver for you. I daily mine every now and then and its not to bad on MPG, easily getting over 30mpg. Maybe shop around in the second hand market if you arent prepaired to pay that for the alternator. Seems to be a lot of Focus ST's breaking with some pretty newish components on them as cars seem to be worth more in parts at the moment then as a complete sale.

Was kinda in similar boat recently, my car needed T-belt change and exhaust replacement (so even more $$$ to be spent than in OP's case) and I did have a look around on whats available to get as possible replacement rather than fixing mine.
And I ended up with new belt, exhaust and some extra parts that will be put on in near future. Nothing available around for any sensible price point, especially on low-spec irish market. "normal" cars like Corollas and Insignias in basic specs are available with 30% price premium and "ooh nice" cars like S4 or Golf R are non existent on market (and if are, cost arm&leg as are very rare here). Plus my poor car wouldnt be worth anything in state it was at (failing belt and broken exhaust) so investment in it seemed to be most sensible option even thought its 17y old daily comuter. as Andy said - nothing will give you driving pleasure of T5 for the cost of repairing/maintenance, especially in current climate , unless you are just fed up with fuel economy/taxes.

I think if you do so few miles then petrol costs don't come into it. How much would you spend on a replacement, or I should say: how long would it take to balance out the savings on road tax for the T5 vs the cost of the new runabout?
If you fancy a new(er) car go for it, sometimes we just want a change. The fact you bought a T5 to begin with means you appreciate the power, delivery, sound of it, so might it be worth holding onto it for a little longer and just enjoying it? Would it be worth changing the rear section of the exhaust for a little more of that 5 cylinder noise to really enjoy it until it's ready to say goodbye? Think the noise of my T5 was the best thing about it
