XC40 T3 Auto is it underpowered?
Looking at going to look at an XC40 T3 Auto is it likely to appear to be underpowered?
Have an old model XC60 D3 auto (keeping it too ) love the torque of diesel but petrol seems the way to go will it be too sluggish? |

“Underpowered” is a highly subjective term Chances are - if you mostly drive in the flats and you don’t tow - T3 will probably be a perfectly adequate replacement for your old D3. Only way to be sure is to test it though.

We are on our second T3 Auto, we had a 19 plate until April this year, then replaced it with a new one, following a trade in offer we couldn’t ignore.
When we ordered the first one, I was a little worried that it would be underpowered as the demonstrator that I drove was a diesel, and a T3 was not available to try out, but I need not have worried as the performance is absolutely fine; the acceleration is brisk and the car will sit easily at the limit on motorways without feeling stressed at all. Apart from feeling a little “buzzy” when pushed hard, there is nothing to suggest that the car has a relatively small engine. We once went to the Lake District with another couple of adults (none of us being particularly lightweight) and a fair amount of luggage, and kept ahead of the other traffic, even on the twisty and steep roads there. They are great cars, and we certainly would not have replaced ours with another one if there had been any doubt about the performance, economy or refinement of the T3

Have an old model XC60 D3 auto (keeping it too ) love the torque of diesel but petrol seems the way to go will it be too sluggish? sluggish cars disappeared about 25 years ago :-) even the 240 was not sluggish if you drove it properly. a fully laden 72bhp 340 might have been but fine unladen. The new powertrains are led by the debut of the much-anticipated T3 petrol, Volvo's first ever three-cylinder engine. The latest addition to Volvo's Drive-E engine family, the T3 is ideally suited to the XC40's role as a nimble and efficient, urban-friendly vehicle. The compact, 1.5-litre, direct-injection unit develops a healthy 156hp at 5,000rpm and is matched to a six-speed manual transmission. An eight-speed automatic option will be introduced at a later date. There's no shortage of pulling muscle from the XC40 T3, with 265Nm of torque available from 1,850 all the way to 3,850rpm. This helps support a towing capacity of up to 1.6 tonnes with a braked trailer. Acceleration is equally impressive for an entry-level petrol engine, with 0-62mph dispatched in 9.4 seconds. Against this lively performance, benchmark efficiency figures reveal combined cycle fuel economy of up to 45.6mpg and CO2 emissions from 144g/km.
