I don't think that the gearbox has any bearing on the longevity of the engine - oil changes at the correct interval using a good quality oil and filter are what really count. It all comes down to your driving style. My personal preference would be the auto - why bother with three pedals when two work just as well? Jack |

For town/city work an automatic as they're less stressful - only 2 pedals; if you do predominantly distance/motorway/rural running then a manual, not least because they're more highly geared so more economical and relaxing on long runs (17mph/1000 in direct top for an auto, vs 20mph/1000 in direct top on a manual and 25mph/1000 in 5th). I used to run between Glasgow and Edinburgh at weekends and 50mph at 3000rpm takes a long time; once I got a manual model 2800rpm meant 70mph, much more relaxing.

I had a 2.0litre 240 Auto and it was deathly slow. I eventually up all thoughts of overtaking on A roads, so yes, unless you drive like a nun, go for the 2.3 at least, if not a GLT.
Also the 4 speed Aisin Warner boxes leak for fun, not a major issue, all you have to do is replace the fibre seal where the prop goes in and the metal one inside the rear cover on the box. (Some people don't do both of them and the problem is still there.) The 240 has a nice enough manual shift that unless you drive mostly in town, where an auto is handy, or need one for medical reasons, I'd get a manual. |
