Yes I heartily endorse AMSOIL (cheque in the post? wink wink), on the first test drive it felt like a different car, almost like a weight had been lifted off my trusty volvo. Im not sure if its the Amsoil or the bad condition of the existing gearbox oil, Probably a combination of both! Well worth the money just for the piece of mind. I cant believe I was towing with the oil in such a poor condition!

Glad to hear that you've had the same improvement as me Tim! Its expensive stuff but is well worth it IMHO. Hopefully we won't need to do it again for a quite a few years...

Fascinating to read about the results others have achieved.

I have my Amsoil and will be doing my 940 today. I'll report back later.

so thats 3 in the Amsoil club!

My 940 seems to be getting better the more I drive it, Maybe its just me! I wonder what the difference would have been if Id used normal autobox oil instead.

It will improve for about 200 miles whilst the synthetic Amsoil ATF strips out the remaining varnish and contaminants.

Thumbs up

Job done.

While I was at it, I also removed and cleaned out the gearbox oil sump and the gauze filter.

The dip-stick tube was reluctant to come off the sump so I took out the 2 bell-housing bolts and removed pipe and sump together.

The sump had unpleasant black deposits, but the gauze filter was quite clean. The oil smelt really bad and was very black. I think it might be the original oil, 125k miles?

After filling with Amsoil, there is an improvement in smoothness, no noticable difference in power transmission on my car (which was OK before).

Was it difficult getting the gearbox oil sump off?

From the FAQ it looks like it's traumatic for a 940?

Thanks to all for a v useful thread
