Can i suggest Rivnuts instead of Rawlpugs? I'd go for aluminium ones seing as the loading isn't high and you don't want to risk deforming the door while setting them but they would take up the excessive clearance. Steel Rivnuts would be better from the point of view of galvanic corrosion but offset against the risk of deforming the door i'd go for aluminium versions.
You know me too well Dave - I'd decided I would fit the driver's door mirror whilst out walking Bob. I may leave it a day or two just to make sure there are no problems with the Peugeot one.

Rivnuts are not a bad idea, I may even have some left over from a previous project (something on the RB I should think - I'm pretty sure you will have recommended them at the time). The good thing about the new mirrors is the screws are accessed from the outside - the captive studs on the old one were very difficult to get at.

:-)

A pair of countersunk machine screws through the mirror and into the Rivnuts would work well i think Alan. Also i've just remembered somewhere i have some "rubber rivnuts", got them from my local fastener emporium and found some on fleabay :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/183569114123

Besides the obvious advantage of being re-usable, they also won't harm or galvanically corrode anything and assuming there is a rubber gasket between the mirror foot and the door will improve resilience, i'd suggest M5 as a starting point but i don't have the mirrors in front of me to check the size of the screw holes nor GAM to check how big the holes are on the doors! All the sizes are on that listing, it's a seller i've bought from many times when i can't find what i want in (or can't be bothered to go to) my local fastener place.

Those mirrors always looked like a carry-over from the 404 to me when they were used on the 504, the 404 always reminded me of the result of a breeding program between the Austin-Morris "Ox-Bridge" Farina range and the Volvo Amazon, if you see what i mean :

As such they should suit GAM very nicely!

No doubt they'd also look good on an "OxBridge" too!

I get my rivnut stuff from Dafra, good prices and good quality. https://www.dafra.co.uk/rivnuts.html

The DRNT512 Heavy duty ratchet is a good bit of kit.

Peugeot are still going having bought out then merged with Citroen and Chrysler (Europe) and are now known as PSA Group in English or (i think) Groupe SPA in French, i believe it's Societe Peugeot Automobiles and now having merged with FCA (Fiat-Chrysler Automotive) form Stellantis Group.

Most of their cars are now Euroblobs as i'd call them, no character and not much reliability. The 504 (and maybe 604) was the last real Peugeot before they changed to making Euroblobs - likewise the CX was about the last real Citroen.

Wouldn't give any French car driveway space personally, worked on them in the past and none of it was pretty!

Agreed 100%.

The French, bless them , used to make some great motors. I’m with you on the modern ones, wouldn’t have one on the drive! 🤮

I had a couple of French cars early on (in the 80s), a Peugeot 305 (or was it 304) estate which wasn’t all that bad, and later someone gave me a Renault 4 (which was awful). In both cases the motor cars were all I could afford at the time, in particular the Renault 4. I’d just been promoted to captain and used the extra money to get a mortgage to buy my first house, so I was living on packet soup at the time. A mate was being posted to Germany and buying a new, tax free car, so he just gave me the keys. I couldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, and it did tide me over for a year or so, but it was a horribly built down to the lowest possible price everywhere.

… I have not had any French motor cars since :-)

I suddenly remembered where I’d stashed the rivnuts Dave, about a dozen left over from some previous project. They look like M5 and so should be just about right. I’ll probably get round to fitting the driver’s side mirror with them tomorrow.

That old Peugeot looks really cool, I’m sure the mirrors will be perfect for GAM… and work far better than the old ones.

:-)
