Grinding knocking top mount xc60
Still having problems with a grinding noise from drivers side front.
My 2012 xc60 drivers side front spring snapped. Had the top mount bearing replaced and springs plus links both sides. However still the noise persists especially over bumps. Had volvo do a quick test drive after service and he said top bearing. Spoke to volvo parts today and they said top mount bearings which I thought I had replaced had 2 parts One is rubber with a steel plate attached costing £40 which was replaced a further part costing about 120 which all forms the top of the strut/ bearing I’m not sure what the other part is called. Volvo not helpful. I suppose my question should be. Is the top mount bearing formed of 2 parts and would this be the possible grinding knocking. And what are the 2 parts called |

Then you have the strut mount, which is a metal plate. What brand of parts were used when replacing them? Generally, top mounts/bearings don't make a grinding noise unless really badly worn. As they've already been replaced if I'm understanding your post right, it makes me think the following; - You bought two parts, but they didn't fit what you ordered/supplied - They weren't installed properly, or could have been defective from manufacturing (it does happen). I've had brand new mounts that made noise over bumps, believe it or not! - Maybe the new spring hasn't been seated properly into its recess? Pics of parts below for illustration purposes only, don't buy them without checking that they fit your particular car! You can buy the parts individually, or as a "kit". Top mount https://www.autodoc.co.uk/febi-bilstein/7106436 Bearing https://www.autodoc.co.uk/febi-bilstein/1887509 Kit with both of the above in https://www.autodoc.co.uk/febi-bilstein/7286646 The only way they can fix it is take the whole shock absorber assembly out of the car to see what's wrong. Did they align the car the first time after replacing the spring/top mounts? If they didn't, they should have. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but they'll have to do an alignment again after they fix it for the second time.

I replaced a front spring and a top mount/ bearing. It was OK for about 6 months when the noise returned. I coul replicate the noise by bouncing the front spring.
I took it to my normal Volvo service garage Claytons of Mansfield who diagnosed the to mount and replaced it under warranty including labour even though I had fitted the first one. All genuine Volvo parts.
