Default Pre or post 2009 D5 auto?

Hi all,

I'm thinking about upgrading to an XC90. My budget means I'm looking at cars around 2009. There was a change to the D5 auto for MY2009 model year which lowered the co2 emmisions and therefore lowers the tax. Does anyone know what the update was and whether it was a good change aside from the reduced emissions? I don't want to buy a MY2009 model with the lower rate tax (£315 v £540 currently) and then discover that the older engines with higher emissions are more reliable or something like that.

Thanks,

Mike

The newer the car the better

2009 is a Euro4 diesel, I have one.

Euro5 happened in Jan 2011:
https://www.media.volvocars.com/uk/e...-new-d5-engine

According to this, Euro4 was around in 2005:
http://www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/ca...s/2005066.html

So 2009 +/- 1 year is still a Euro4.

Thanks for the response. Yes, they are both Euro 4 engines but the later one must have had some changes to lower the emissions and get it in the lower tax band. I'm curious to know what those changes were.

Its a bit of a mine field, with several changes in 1 year some models changed at different times (sure the SE/SE LUX changed in week 37 2008, Sport/R-Design and Exec were later) ... best use the reg number of the car and check on the DVLA website it will confirm the CO2 for the car, and you can then establish which band it falls into.

Hope it helps

Thanks for the reply TruckbusUK. I know how to work out which co2 band they fall in to, I was just hoping someone would know what changed in the engine that resulted in the lower emissions.

Can’t answer your question, but I’d be interested to know myself!

Sometimes no change in the engine.

In 2010 I bought a July registered 2006 S60 D5 185 Manual. At the same time a good friend bought an almost identical S60 D5 185 Geartronic ( registered 2 weeks apart ) and because his was Auto, he paid more VED due to differing emissions.

Crazy

Yes, the autos always have higher emissions. But the changes I am interested in are when comparing 2 D5 Euro 4 Auto models. There was a change somewhere in the engine or gearbox that meant the emissions were lowered for 2 otherwise identical cars. I cannot find any information anywhere to explain what the change was.

Went to look at an Executive model today, really impressed with the car but it was the higher tax band and due a cam belt change so that pushed it out of our price range and he wouldn't budge on the price at all unfortunately.
