Default Tyres

MOT is next weekend and I was giving the car a onceover just in case there was something that was going to cost me dearly at the MOT that I was not expecting. Looking under the car the lower engine cover is ripped long ways where I must have run over something. Not a danger but I didn't expect that. The car is 5 years old so wasn't expecting any bushes to be gone and I got the missus to move the steering wheel while I checked track rod ends etc. One thing that looks like I will need is two front tyres. They are on the wear bumps and I guess will possibly scrape through but more than likely need replaced. The tyres that are on there are Michelin Primacy run flats which are are a hard ride due to the stiff sidewalls. I have a spare in the boot now so I reckon I will replace them with non run flats, but which ones? Any recommendations?

Tyres seem to be personal preference. I'm currently running Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 3's which are a high performance summer tyre. In winter weather there not the best but not bad either, in dry warm weather they are great. Where I live we don't get a lot of snow, a couple of mm if we're lucky so I can't justify winter tyres. I get the Goodyears when theres a cashback offer on. The tyre wears been great on them and I've done a bit of towing also. I would consider them again.
Michelin now do my size in the cross climates and I want to give them a go. I did have them on my previous V70 but only had a few months out of them before I sold it so couldn't review them properly. They seem to have a good review as an all season tyre so so depending on where you live they maybe a good all-rounder tyre but they are usually a bit more expensive than a lot of other premium tyres out there. Have a look round and see what's on offer and when you find a tyre you like Google any cashback offers as different companies seem to have promotions on different times of the year, usually £40 of 2 or £80 of 4.

If you want any video reviews have a look on YouTube and there are some tyre review websites about also.
Get the best you can afford and I'm sure you be OK.

Just be aware that switching from runflat is a modification, so contact insurance company, otherwise you may find yourself uninsured should something happen...

If you move away from run flats then you should do all four so the handling of the car is predictable and even. Given the engine/vehicle combination I would go for something mid range with good wet grip - such as Goodyear Efficient Grip etc.

I'm surprised the car was equipped with run flats anyway! Was this a standard fit?

As far as I can see it was. I got the car last February and it had no spare. I bought a spare wheel after reading the stranded with a crumped/shredded flat tyre stories.

I would agree with the Cross Climates, had a set on my previous car (5 series BMW) , found them to be very good in wet and snow (hilly round here and regular snow) never needed to fit my winter wheels and tyres.

The tyre question is never ending but I'm another that would recommend cross climates.

I've just fitted them to mine. On a non sporty car there seems to be very little compromise and i was amazed how good they were in recent snow both in Lancashire and Aberdeen.

i'll certainly be fitting them on my wife's car when the time comes.

Default Some make of All Season Tyre

I have Kleber Quadraxers on my 940 (RWD). On second set now. Good in all conditions and decent mileage and reasonably priced from one of the suppliers on the web.
Daughter has Nokian Weatherproofs on her XC70 (FWD). Couldn’t find Klebers in the required size. Good in all conditions but rather expensive and the edges of the fronts wear rather quickly. Car had part worn Pirellii Scorpions on when bought but didn’t like them.
Stay away from standard summer tyres as they are usually useless once air temperature is below 7 degrees C.
