Don't break you hand.

The information you give is very limited. To begin with, do you have an electric or mechanical parking brake?

Hi, Thought by a 2008 model they all had electric handbrakes. Ours is inop, the dash tells us so and the warning light is flashing. If it makes a difference its a D5 auto

Ideally you need to hook it up to diagnostics to work out why it isn't working.

I've not experienced any problems with mine (touch wood) but I know the Passats with EPBs like to have caliper, motor and connection malfunctions. Battery voltage can cause issues on those too.

given up, it's in the dealers. Big bill no doubt, but i don't have the time, plus i know Landrovers better.
Did plug it into a snap-on reader as i could get hold of one, it came back as no communication.
Forums suggest the control unit has turned bad.

get yourself a comfortable arm chair and a large whiskey before you call the dealer for the bill :-) . You can check the individual brake servos with a battery . The switch can often go US and most faults are usually simple ones . Hope its not too expensive. Let us know the outcome .

Not sure if they have got back to you yet but I had the same problem four years ago at 250000 miles. Booked my car in at local Indy who said fault was showing as module. Went to collect my car and paid £399 incl labour then couldn't drive away as stuck on again. They said it had been ok after fitting the replacement but perhaps that was faulty and will order another. Whilst waiting for module I did some research online and found that the VW Passats had same system with same problem. A lot of the time it was the button/switch you use to activate the handbrake, went back to indy and asked them to fit new button first which came to £57 and no problem after that. Two weeks ago and now on 426000 had the flashing Parking brake symbol again, went for the cheapest option and ordered and fitted switch, been fine since.

Since you have the car at the dealer now, it doesn't really matter. But just to be complete, no, manual (by foot pedal) parking brakes were still the norm in 2008. Although many had electrical, included in some kit or edition.
