There are only one or two independents who can programme a key for the P2 platform, they have to be vetted and registered by Volvo, they have to call Volvo while the car is with them to programme the key. Volvo send a file to their computer which is then loaded to the key/car and the operator can add or remove unwanted keys. I paid £300 last year for mine, the local dealership was over £400 at the time and I think it's around £430 now.

I now have two keys programmed to my car (missing keys removed from the system) plus the cloned key the dealer I bought the car from supplied

All keys erased

2 keys coded (the clone key does not show up as it is an identical copy of the original key, but it does unlock/lock and start the car)

i believe the cheapest route for a volvo key is to order a service key with out the multi button fob iv never used any of the other buttons but the lock and unlock so just a key would not bother me if it saves money on a 19year old car.

Anyhow the price for the key,MY03 S60, is £429.25!!!!!!!!!
When I asked how they justify that no explanation was forthcoming, the lad on the phone sounded embarrassed and he apologised.
So fair warning folks DONT LOSE YOUR KEYS.
Check that loss of keys isn't covered under insurance. Either motor or house under personal belongings.

When I got my first Volvo in 1976, I remember thinking that the cars were great value but they got you back with the price of spares. As my dad used to say sometimes, " could you just check that price and that you haven't added the date in by accident." God rest his soul.

Keys are a rip off, volvo want £350 when the battery dies in the sport fob / plastic tag.
I cut the tag open and fitted a new battery and glued it back together, job done for £2.50...so saved £347.50.
We are not only cash cows for the government but for the dealers also.

WOW....this thread is over 5 years old!

I'm about to have a conversation about a Volvo key....with a used car dealership 740 miles away in Indianapolis, IN.
Days ago I was told, "You get what keys we have...I'll have to check".

Now I'm more serious about the car....but before I book a flight to the Midwest, I need a definitive answer.

I will go to my local Volvo dealership and inquire about key pricing.
The Indianapolis 500 is a famous car race. I hope it's not the price of my key.

edit: Just returned.....Key and programming for a 2014 XC70.....$650.
