The changes only effect those that are applying not current trade card holders, they will only give cards to qualified mechanics working for a garage or those in the trade. i.e not DIY club members.

Basically anything that a mechanic would use.
So car parts, paint, cleaning stuff and tools too. Sometimes you can even get a discount on completely random things as well! I managed to get a discount on a sat nav a while back, that was already on sale.
Basically, I just offer my trade card to the person on the till regardless and usually get a discount

As Gmad says also the tools that are discounted are normally only the 'Halfords pro' range and not the budget or draper/ sealey stuff.

do you know whether they have enacted the changes, or is it still relatively simple?

NOTHING gets checked. After the staff have issued you the card. Your basic details are kept. No copies etc of your "ID" or proof you are trade are kept etc

its all very easy . Just find a nice member of staff, let them suggest it to you
pop back to see them , job done , the staff dont care !
