Engine retrofit to meet Euro 4 - any possibilities?
Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is set to start at within a couple of streets of my home in Bristol later this year. Daily charge £9! I won't even be able to a weekly shop at the nearest large supermarket without going into the zone - unless I make a detour along roads pretty much adjacent to the boundary of the CAZ - creating several miles worth of extra emissions and particles!
Does anyone know about the possibilities for retrofitting the engine or adapting the exhaust system on 1990's Volvo 940 Estate, so at a minimum it will meet the Euro 4 emission standard? I've looked at the Clean Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (CVAS) website - which seems to actively discourage owners of old private vehicles from doing this but, as I understand it, one third of a car's carbon 'cost' is in it's manufacture - so makes sense to me to keep a car going as long as possible. Besides, I love my old Volvo, it's virtually a classic... Any information and advice gratefully received. Many thanks. |

There are no possiblities. Whatever internal combustion engine you fit to your car the recorded emissions rating will remain as it was when the car is first registed.
The only exception to this is if you were to convert it to pure electric power and were to then navigate the process to get it inspected and then registered in the "electric vehicle" taxation class. Of course, this is liable to cost as much or more than a used electric car.

I'll second Familyman's sentiment, before you spend any money be 101% sure that you can get it accredited to the satisfaction of Bristol council. I believe for the London Low Emission Zone it is possible to get HGVs accredited but not cars, CVAS 'discouraging' you may be because the administrative side of it is impossible to negotiate. I can relate to your feelings over the ludicrous nature of either driving miles out of your way or scrapping a good car to get a newer one with the consequent emissions in either case.
