Question T5 Engine replacement

I have a 2004 S40 T5 (2.5) which has a "banjaxed" engine, due to it being run with very low oil. It now sounds like a bag of bolts and wines.....

Getting hold of a second hand unit is turning out to be a problem, and I don't want to buy a brand new one from Volvo.

My question is, does anyone know if you can retro fit another engine from the S40 range (1.8 or 2.0ltr etc), without running into to many problems. It seems you can get a few good second hand or recon units of other power, but not the genuine T5 engine.

Can anyone offer any assistance.

Cheers

You may be able to look into a Focus ST engine?

Apart from it saying 'Ford' on the cam cover and probably the engine mounts it's the same unit. There's bound to be a few Focus ST's which have been written off with engines intact.

I'm surprised the T5 doesn't have a low oil warning. Even my crappy old peugeot had an oil level gauge on the dash!

The ST engine is a slightly different unit and would require a modified ECU which would certainly cost you a fortune to configure.

Default ST engine.

The ST engine is exactly the same as that fitted as a 'T5' in the Volvo car(s) in question.

There is indeed some difference in the wiring loom arround the engine, however, you would be fine to buy a used ST engine off ebay where there are allways several offered; you would just need to make sure that you fitted just the ST engine without its loom and connected up the Volvo wiring....job done.

I do have a spare ST engine which you a very welcome to check before you buy one for yourself....it is in Egham, Surrey.

Regards, Don.

The ST lump does not have steel bore liners and uses solid shims as opposed to hydraulic ones on the Volvo.

The ST lump is also 25mm shorter.

It is therefore a slightly different lump.
