Yeah I read that with interest but thats the old Uniroyal rainsport 1, not the much newer rainsport 2 ! ( How old is that test ? ) The reviews I have read on the "2" say grip is excellent wet & dry, the only real issue is that it may be at the expense of a few thousand miles in wear !
I guess you pay your money & make your choice at the end of the day, I mean I know I'm never going drive my cars so hard that "lose it" in the dry but you still want to able stop in a hurry when required in the wet & dry for that matter !

try getting 225/45/17 tyres in stead, and they have almost the exact rolling radius ( i think the 205/50/17 is half a mm bigger) but cheaper and easier to get. but as for tyres, i'm getting vredestein tyres had them on my C4 and they were epic in the dry and wet and very good in snow. but ive heard good things about rainsports but you'll be lucky to get 10k out them problem being to be soo grippy in wet they need to be a very soft compund softer than contis and you pay the price in longevity.

Is it acceptable & legal to fit 225/45/17 on instead of the 205/50/17 ?

"legally" speaking, I'm sure the requirements are the tread depth and overall condition of the tyre which are of concern.

However, if you are caught speeding due to a change in rolling circumference then that's your problem, ignorance is not going to count for much!

More importantly would be what the insurance company are happy to accept?

legally you can fit what ever size of wheel and tyre you want aslong as both wheels on the same axel are the same and it does nto protrude from the body work.
now your limited physically by how wide your wheel is to how wide a tyre you can fit on the standard 7 inch rim a 225 is fine you just get slightly more rim protection than you would the 205 but as i said the difference in circumfrence is about half a mm, which is less than the difference between a new and worn tyre. so your speedo wont be affected, the speedo usally read upto 10% over the actual speed as standard so you can afford to get a very slightly larger circumfrence tyre. if you google the tyre and wheel bible it has all the info you'll ever need. but 225/45/17s is what i'm going for for the same tyre they are about £17 each cheaper at cost than a 205/50/17.
