Default Radiator Fan Switch - 440

Does anyone know how the radiator fan switch is in the rad? I can't even see or get the wiring (plug?) off.

Maybe i need to rephrase this,

I need help in identifying how to remove the wiring plug on the sensor. I have tried (gingerly) to pull the the 'plug' off but it seems to be held in some fashion. I believe that the sensor is screwed into the rad but GSF Carparts have supplied me with a screw in plug.....the only problem is that it only has 2 pins. it also looks a lot smaller than what appears to be in the rad, mine looks a lot longer and quite solid. Has anyone ever removed the same sensor as I really need some guidance on this. Mr Haynes is not helpful with this at all...

On mine it looks like its a clipped plug on a screw-in unit down the side of the rad...

How do you mean a 'clipped' plug? Mine is also screwed into the rad but I can't get the wiring off even. It feels like there is something unsighted down the back of the plug. I've attempted to 'unlatch' it by pressing top and bottom etc. but I don't want to get too rough and end up breaking something which will be even harder to replace. I've also used a mirror with no success. Very frustrating!! Which model have you got?

Hiya, the thermal switch has 2 part numbers,

for pre-1991: 3448916
for 1992-on: 3463730

PS, you have the same engine as me :P

Ahh, ok, that is both very useful and mystifying. Mystifying because the part number you have given me for 1992 on is exactly the same as MRG has given me and that GSF have supplied a 2 pin switch. The useful bit is the picture as it quite clearly shows 3 pin connector in the triangle arrangement and is nothing like the switch that is supplied against the part number listed for the car!! The pic also shows what I guess is the clip. I think that I may be applying a little screwdriver with a bit more force, but still confused as to where to get the right switch. Ever had issues with yours??

Your image post was tops, got the plug off & mine is exactly the same as your image. May I ask where you got the pdf's from? All that now remains is finding a replacement switch. GSF says that the Volvo part number is only a 2 pin switch so I can only assume that they are wrong. Once again, thanks

Is that something that is readily available? I've just come back from spending time at my local Volvo dealer MRG of Chippenham who were fantastic. As a result of your diagrams, I managed to get the plug off, so many thanks for that. What that meant was that I was able to bridge the fan plug which proved.....................that after all that, it isn't the sensor!! They put it on a ramp, cleaned off the earth strap, apparently a past problem, but have come to the conclusion that it is the sender. Just hope that does really solve the problem. As for the 3 pin rad sensor, it is thought that they were fitted at that time as aircon was offered, its just that mine hasn't (boo-hoo). Thanks for your help though, very much appreciated.
Any good with the remote un/locking which isn't working?? Central lock works & the immobiliser isn't cutting the vehicle out (thank goodness).
