Thumbs up The end ...(I hope)

I thought I would complete the thread I started. I went back to the dealer I got the car from originally and they inspected it and said it was definately warped after market discs (again), So I bit the bullet and had them fit Volvo discs and pads and there have been no problems at all and thats after using them for a couple of weeks. I cant believe that the after market discs could be so bad, but thanks to all who contributed help and suggestions...

Hi putnam,

I had to have new discs fitted at 36k miles. I wanted aftermarkets but couldn't source any quick enough so had to bite the bullet and go with Volvo discs and pads.
The discs have only been on ten days and already have rust on the outer edges, despite the car being used daily.

Have you noticed any rust appearing yet ?

Default Rust

I have noticed some rust on the edge of my discs but I think this is just what happens to discs given where they are and what they do....e.g. subject to heating , cooling and water from the road surface, the main face of the disc should stay rust free due to the brake pad friction so i think yours are normal..

Rust appears on my discs overnight depending on the weather.

My wifes Honda motorbike has its original discs, the bike is eleven years old, and they have no corrosion on them what-so-ever and that bike stands out in all weathers.

Motor bike discs are made of a different material than a cars discs.

That's what happens when you switch to an inferior metal for car discs. They use grey iron which is easier and less expensive to make. The downside is it has lower tensile strength and wears out faster.
Upside for the motor trade is they get to replace discs more often and now consider them a service item where pre-1989 you changed the pads but rarely the discs.

Also the type of brake pads now used are harder thus cause more wear on the discs.

Anyone know if warped discs would be covered under warranty?

This was the response I got from Volvo regarding brakes:
"Volvo Car Corporation consider brakes as wear and tear items. These are therefore not generally covered"
