Have you considered a Mk2 Cortina? The 1600E's are supposed to hold their own against US & Japanese extravagancia?

I had a 1600E back in the late 70s..
Very reliable, but it went rotten! Sadly not cost effective for a work car either, hence looking at cheap cars (S60/V70/Mondeo)..

Of all the cars I owned, my own favourite was probably my cortina 2000E, though I thoroughly respect the choice of 1600E too.

Actually, at risk of deeply offending Volvo's stylists, I sometimes think the flowing lines of the S60 may be triggering memories of my 'coke-bottle' cortina, and may explain why I like it so much.

BTW - one more thing to add in comparison of V70 & S60... I find the view through the back window seems to disguise the car's bulging rear flanks and I sometimes find I've cut it MUCH closer than I thought when backing into tight spaces. The problem is completely solved by the rear parking sensors, but not all cars have them fitted.

Worth bearing in mind. Thankyou.
My work car will spend its life hooning up and down the M54, M6, A14.
So just needs to be comfortable, reliable and capable of getting all the crap I have to carry in its boot!

For a more definitive answer on the size of the boot, here's me and a friend:

I'm 6' and he's 5'8. The lid closed.

A combination of this photo and a quick drive in a friend of a friends S60, plus the fact that they are a respectable price, has just knocked another V70 off my list!
Tis now between an S60 and a Mondeo..

I just spotted an S80 parked around the corner from my house. On the face of it looks just like a big S60!
So I've added them to my list..
