Default BW35 Oil change

Is there anything to be gained from changing the oil in BW35 gear box.

Maybe I just feel that after almost half a century it is due a change but I could be incorrect

If the fluid is a nice colour and doesn't smell burnt then you won't gain much by changing it. It doesn't get contaminated in the same way that engine oil does. If the fluid is brown and smells burnt, it's contaminated with worn friction material suspended in the fluid, and in those cases, sometimes changing the fluid makes things worse not better. To be sure you've got most of the old fluid out and replaced with new, you'd have to do about four drain/refills with use in between because you can't drain the fluid from the converter.

My advice would be if it ain't broke, don't fix it.....

Agree with the above. The BW35 is quite sensitive to ATF level; make sure you follow the service manual, you need to run the car to warm up the box and then fill to the right notch. I recently removed the gearbox sump on mine and cleaned it and refilled; whilst the fluid was pretty clean there was a lot of gunk in the sump which I'm pleased I've gotten rid of.

Andrew - PM sent, but if you can't receive them yet, was just asking if you might be interested in taking your Volvo 164 to the Southern Volvo Rally at The Royal Armouries Museum at Fort Nelson, inland from Portsmouth on May 22nd.
There may well be several of us there with our 164s, so could be a good meet.
