Assuming your car hasn't got the later plastic grill, I have the metal sash assembly you need (pre-used of course). I bought it at our Beaulieu show a couple of months back - just because it was there! However, I don't think I have the correct nylon fixing clips, but need to dig it out to be sure.
I also have second hand hinge assemblies - but guess shipping to the other side of the pond won't be cheap. Your best bet would be to look round for a 144 or 164 in a dismantlers near you: there are often pictures of unloved cars on facebook Volvo 164.
As Derek says, finding all the little bits in order to complete your new toy is part of the fun, but don't go for anything with serious structural rust - like sill ends and around that windscreen. Yes Volvo 240 replacement parts fit and are available - but do you want the immense hassle of cutting out and welding in a new screen surround! Nah!

Thanks. It has the two-piece metal grille. I'm really on the fence about this car. Don't think I've ever spent so much time researching parts for a car I didn't already own. Must be the insanity kicking in again.

I don't think the goop around the windscreen is because of rust. The car is fairly clean. The owner said the windshield seal didn't fit right. Who knows where the seal came from. Probably not the correct part.

However, the parts availability (and this forum) are giving me that 100% secure feeling in both summer and winter.

If this isn't "the one", then at least I'll have done some homework, so when the right one does come along, I'm ready to pounce. I'd also consider an early 144, but the 164 is just that much more appealing. These cars are super rare in my region because of the weather. Would ideally like to find something from the southwest USA and go from there. Then you don't feel like an idiot throwing time, money, and effort at the toy. If you know what I mean, and I think you do!

Don't know a better one in the States.

Good luck and have fun with your 164, Kay
Just reporting back - talked to Eric (must be Ian's brother?) on Sunday, and he was quite helpful.

He replied to my email on Sunday. I didn't expect a reply until Monday. We spoke for a while on Sunday.

Default vent windows

This might seem like an odd question, but - are the front vent windows supposed to open? The levers on the vent windows seemed a little mysterious, and after playing with them for a few seconds, I could not figure out how they opened. The owner said he had never opened them or tried to force them. Is there some trick to opening them, or does it sound like the levers were broken? A close-up photo of what a 1969 vent window lever should look like would be helpful. Couldn't find anything online.

Assuming the door windows have not been changed from original, those quarter-lights were designed to open. However, over the passage of time (and perhaps several owners) they might have been glued shut, the catches may have seized or the pivots broken so sealed shut.
On my '72 164E my 1/4 lights whistle in the wind when driving (!) because the catches came off (they were glued to the glass in those days, and the glue failed) but I can live with that. However, I have more than one (!) pre-1971 164 too (suppose I'm a hoarder!) and they all have differing catches. Possibly some were deviations from what was originally fitted for some reason, possibly there were different options then?
I can photograph my differing types for you if interested, but can't post here: mail me on paultill38@gmail.com so I can send direct. Won't be instant though as grand kids off school so full-on entertainment season!

Default key blanks

Where is the best source for key blanks? Is there anything special about them, or would a good hardware store be able to make copies?

Main key: E22511
Valey key: FR848

Prefer OEM, but generic or aftermarket blanks would probably be fine.
